The Standard: Solid Turn Out for Entrance Exam

Brother Rice Entrance ExamBrother Rice High School had 290 8th graders take the entrance exam on Saturday January 12, 2013. This is due to all the events that Brother Rice held to inform 8th graders about what Brother Rice has to offer.

Brother Rice made sure it did as much as possible to inform 8th graders about the school, what a day is like here, showcase its academics and athletics, and provide a general feeling of the atmosphere in the hallway and all around the school.“Some events that we offered for 8th graders were our two open houses, shadow days, the Crusader Clash, meet and greets, and various summer camps,” said Mr. O’Connell, Brother Rice Director of Admissions.

“We had a total amount of ninety-six different grammar schools test here as well,” said Mr. O’Connell. “Sixteen boys came from St. John Fisher, ten from St. Germaine, nine from St. Linus, eight from St. Mary Star of the Sea, six from St. Catherine.” These are only a few of many grammar schools students who tested at Brother Rice.

Brother Rice looks to build on that number of 290, and continue to make improvements on recruiting for next year’s entrance exam. The future looks bright, as Brother Rice continues to show excellence in academics, athletics, and preparing men of Edmund Rice for college and beyond.

The Standard: Crusader Clash

On November 20, 2012, Brother Rice High School held its third annual Crusader Clash for seventh and eighth graders. The Crusader Clash is an athletic competition that includes various sporting events, and it is also an opportunity to meet new friends and learn a little more about Brother Rice. This competition is not only an individual competition but also a team event consisting of four to six players.

The individual events included soccer kick, hockey shot, basketball hot shot and shoot away, volleyball serve, baseball speed and accuracy throw, football accuracy throw, weightlifting, standing long jump, and timed 30 yard dash. These events separated the strong from the weak as each recognized only one winner, making for a very fun and competitive evening.

The team events allowed the competitors to be on a team of four to six players.  Teams were composed of friends or someone that the students just meet that day. Team events consisted of dodge ball, four-on-four basketball, four-on-four knee football, and, to finish the night, tug-of-war.

At the end of the night, pizza was served to the athletes while awards were presented to the victorious teams and to the individual winners. Medals were given out to the individuals who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in any of the individual events. For the teams who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd overall, plaques were awarded. Not only the winners, but all of the young athletes enjoyed this great opportunity to have fun and make new friends at the Crusader Clash.

The Standard: Brother Rice Open House

On Sunday November 4, approximately 200 families of 7th and 8th graders visited Brother Rice to get a firsthand look at the school during the first of two Open Houses this year.  Many families from several neighborhoods and schools came to see what Brother Rice is all about.   Prospective students from across the south side viewed the chance to visit Brother Rice as an opportunity to picture themselves as future Crusaders.  Open House is one of the best ways to help make that decision easier.

The 7th and 8th graders and their families were led on a personal tour throughout the school by a National Honor Society student, making several stops along the way. Among the first stops on the tour was the academic presentation given by Mr. Alberts and Mr. Klutcharch in the library, where they discussed topics like the Resource Center, the different levels of academic difficulty, and the requirements for graduation.  Following that presentation, the tour went through the Cainkar Center for a talk about technology and business classes here at Brother Rice.  NHS students also led their groups to another presentation in the chapel that talked about religious life and theology classes.  As each tour traveled from place to place, these families also stopped by various tables set up by teachers.  Information about each subject was put on display, showing everything from English and math, to history and science.

Besides the academics of Brother Rice, another very important aspect of the school is the strength and excitement surrounding the social atmosphere and sports community.  Rice athletics were all gathered in one place, the North gym, for 7th and 8th graders to see what Rice athletics had to offer.  The coaches and players of every sport were excited to meet each young athlete and hear about their interests in that respective sport.  The cafeteria was the place to be for those interested in the vast amount of student activities at Rice.  Brother Rice houses a variety of different students interested in all kinds of topics ranging from politics, technology, chess, drama, and fishing.  There are also many service groups and programs available to these future Crusaders like SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Key Club, and the Edmund Rice Society.

The Open House was not only a chance for young students to visit Brother Rice with their families, but also a chance for the students and staff to display their Rice pride.  Hopefully, these young men and their families have a better understanding now of what the Brother Rice experience is all about.
