James Wilson ’11 of Monmouth College became the second former Crusader in recent years to win a National Championship. (Pat Leonard ’04 ran anchor leg in 4×400 for Wisconsin Stevens Point when they won the National Championship in 2008).

James won the long jump with a leap of 24 feet 2.25 inches. His work was not finished, however. James went on to earn 2 more All-American honors. He is the school’s fifth leading scorer. He attended the University of Notre Dame on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1968. At Notre Dame, he earned the basketball varsity letter, and during his senior year, he also served as a student assistant coach. Under his direction, the Wolfpack basketball program won one North Sectional title, one York Tournament title, and, in 2000, captured SICP’s first Catholic League title in 42 years. One highlight of John’s coaching career was the school’s first and only Illinois Sweet Sixteen appearance. From 2009-2011, John was a television and radio color analyst for the Loyola University Ramblers. In 2011, he was inducted into the inaugural class of Brother Rice’s Circle of Champions, and in 2012, John was inducted into the Chicago Catholic League’s Hall of Fame.

Ricky Palmer ’09: The Road Less Traveled

Rick Palmer NDRicky Palmer is a senior catcher on the Notre Dame baseball team. He doesn’t get much playing time – in fact he only has nine career at-bats – but he doesn’t let this fact bother him. Ricky considers his role on the team as important as that of an everyday starter.

Palmer, who grew up in Orland Park, Ill., attended Brother Rice High School in Chicago. As a sophomore, he made the varsity baseball team and helped lead the Crusaders to the state tournament. Palmer also played on a summer travel team throughout high school and was able to showcase his talents on a larger stage.

The Standard: Mike McQuillan Off to Florida with the Nationals

Mike McQuillan NationalsBefore heading down to Viera, Florida, the spring training home of the Washington Nationals, former Crusader baseball standout Mike McQuillan came back to Brother Rice for a quick visit with his old teachers and coaches. After finishing his college career at the University of Iowa, McQuillan was drafted in the 33rd round of the MLB entry draft by the 2012 NL East Champion Washington Nationals. During his time at Iowa, McQuillan was a career .345 hitter and holds the Hawkeyes’ career record for singles with 136 and is second in hits with 242. McQuillan was also awarded the Bob Oldas award, which made him co-MVP of the team in his senior season.

At Brother Rice, McQuillan was a key part of the 2007 team that finished a fantastic fourth place in the state of Illinois. A game from that season that McQuillan said stood out in his mind was the Super-Sectional game at Standard Bank Stadium against Minooka that sent the Crusaders downstate. As for his college career, McQuillan’s last game holds a special place in his heart when the Hawkeyes took on Purdue. McQuillan went 4-4 and belted a homerun, earning him national player of the week. Earlier that weekend, McQuillan squared off with former teammate and Purdue pitcher, Pat Gannon. In the first and only time the two faced each other, Gannon walked McQuillan after a close call on a 3-2 count.

In this upcoming season, McQuillan projects he will be on the Hagerstown Suns, the single A affiliate of the Nationals. McQuillan looks to return to his natural position at second base, after seeing a lot of action at first base last season at Iowa. McQuillan also hopes to follow in the footsteps of his baseball heroes, Red Sox great Ted Williams and current White Sox manager Robin Ventura. Both players were known for their prowess at the plate and hopefully McQuillan’s sweet swing will be able to punch his ticket to the big leagues in the near future.

Matt Page Recognized by IHSA

Football vs St Rita Southtown 2012 CoverBrother Rice senior Matt Page was named to the 2012-13 IHSA All-State Honorable Mention Team by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Schools that are members of the IHSA nominate a student who has a 3.5 grade point average and participates in at least 2 IHSA sports or activities.

Page, a member of the Brother Rice football and basketball teams, was then chosen from a pool of over 450 students from the state of Illinois who have achieved top academic status.

Congratulations to Matt for being recognized as one of the state’s top student athletes.

The Standard: “Beyond the Arc” with Jim Sexton ’94

Jim Sexton Beyond the Arc AcademyOn March 3, Brother Rice basketball’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder will return to his former school. Jim Sexton ’94 will hold tryouts for a travel basketball program called Beyond the Arc Academy for boys in 4th through 10th grade in the Brother Rice main gym. Sexton started BTAA in 2011, along with current Brother Rice assistant varsity coach Dave Wills ’04, with the goal of making it the best travel and feeder program in the area. Along with the travel team program, BTAA also offers private lessons and an instructional league which is consistent with their mission statement “to grant each player the opportunity to maximize their abilities in all aspects of the game of basketball while encouraging growth in the spirit of teamwork and fun.”

Along with Wills, Sexton runs BTAA with former Brother Rice Alumni John Sexton ’01, who was a member of the Gatorade Replay team; Jim Murtaugh ’05, who is the head sophomore coach at Brother Rice; Brian Harrigan ’05, former freshman coach at Brother Rice; Dan Maloney ’94, who was All Catholic League in ’94; and Ryan O’Reilly ’01, who was All Catholic League in ’01.

Sexton was a three-time All Catholic League player and earned all state honors during his time at Brother Rice, yet he is modest about his personal accolades and says it was more about the team’s success. Before Sexton joined the varsity team, their record was 3-22. When Sexton was a senior, he led the Crusaders to a super sectional berth and a 25-5 season. That year Sexton led Brother Rice to its first ever regional and sectional championships, defeating Hales Franciscan and Mount Carmel respectively. The sectional championship has been heralded as one of the best high school basketball games ever played. Danny Maloney hit a three pointer as time expired to give his team the win over future NBA star Antoine Walker and future NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb and the rest of the Caravan.
