Hosts Wanted for Brother Rice International Students

Green PlanetBrother Rice will be hosting international students beginning in the fall of 2013. These students will be joining us from the People’s Republic of China. While here, they will need a place to stay with a host family; and so our search begins for qualified host families. Any family within 30 minutes of Brother Rice could qualify. The family does not necessarily need to have a child currently enrolled in Brother Rice, but that would be a plus.

Participating families will be offered a stipend of $1,000 per month. The students will have their own insurance and spending money. The host family should speak English at home and ensure that the student eats three nutritious meals per day. The family must also provide a room for exclusive use by the student. Being able to involve the student in family events and activities is a big plus.

The host family will be provided with training and 24/7 emergency support throughout the school year, as well as regular group activities for you and the students to share with other participating families.

Brother Rice is working with Green Planet, an educational service company that specializes in bringing on-the-ground support to international student programs at U.S. high schools to qualify host families. If you would like to know more about the program, visit their website.

If you would like to take advantage of this unique opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life with an enriching intercultural experience for your family, please respond by filling out the Green Planet Host Family Inquiry Form found here.

If you are unable to host an international student, do you know of a loving family that has a spare room available in their home? Would they consider inviting an international student to stay with them during their high school experience in the U.S.? If so, you could receive a $150 referral fee if the family is approved as a host.

Ja’Lon Eason Wins Scholarship to Study Language Abroad

Jalon EasonBrother Rice senior Ja’Lon Eason (Metcalfe School) has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships for 2013-2014.  The NSLI-Y program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly-taught languages in summer and in academic-year overseas immersion programs.

“During my four years at Rice, my passion for language and culture was sparked,” said Ja’Lon.  “A mentor of mine told me, ‘Language is the key to the world.’  I took that and ran with it.  I ran with it to Spanish class, I ran with it to Peru last summer, and now I’m running with it to China this summer to study Mandarin.”

The NSLI-Y scholarship will enable Ja’Lon to study in China for the summer.  The scholarship covers all program costs including travel, tuition, language testing, meals, and accommodations, usually with a host family.  Through his participation in the program, Ja’Lon will serve as a citizen diplomat while developing the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community.

Brother Rice Rugby Sends Three to National Championship

Rugby Luke Meuller 2013Three Brother Rice juniors have been selected to participate in the Boys High School National Invitational Championship will be held on May 16-18, 2013 at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Indiana. Twenty-four teams from across the country have been invited. The following Brother Rice students will be representing Brother Rice in this elite rugby competition:  seniors Tim Barry (St. Albert the Great), Kevin Bresnahan (St. Christina), Brendan Brown (Most Holy Redeemer), Joe Carroll (St. Christina), Marty Cimaglia (St. Bernadette), James Gannon (St. Catherine of Alexandria), Sean Martin (Queen of Martyrs), Tim McGinnis (St. Bernadette), Derek McMahon (St. Christina), Mac Oldfield (St. Alexander), Nick Simon (St. John Fisher), Mike Slattery (Clissold), Marty Waddell (St. John Fisher), and juniors Luke Mueller (St. Barnabas), Nolan Parker (Simmons), and Nate Swanberg (St. Barnabas).

Brother Rice’s rugby team is ranked #33 in the country. The team has been the Illinois Youth Rugby Association State Champions in ‘02, ‘03, ‘04, ‘05, ‘06, ‘08, and ’12.  They are undefeated in 2nd consecutive regular season.  The rugby team finished 3rd in the Midwest Championships a week ago, losing only to Cathedral of Indianapolis, last year’s National Champions; this was a best finish ever from the State of Illinois.

“The team has always had a strong program here in the state of Illinois,” said Head Rugby Coach David Fee.  “When I took over the program 3 years ago, I always thought that we should pursue the highest levels that are out there.  If winning a state championship is the highest level, then we should pursue it.  If it’s a Midwest championship, then we should pursue it, or a national championship, we should pursue it.  Brother Rice has supported the rugby program from the beginning, and I’m excited to see what we can do on the national stage.”

Coach Fee added, “The boys put in a lot of hard work, and this is a tough time to commit with Proms, Graduations, and other goings-on.  It’s a show of character for these young men to buy into a common goal, and put in the necessary work on and off the field to make it a reality.  USA Nationals, here we come!”

SouthtownStar: Cal Kennedy Stands Tall in Brother Rice Net

Cal KennedyWhen Cal Kennedy walked into the pool area at Brother Rice during water polo tryouts in February, Brother Rice coach Chris Mulcrone was — to say the least — excited.

“When he walked in the door, I’ll say I had a pretty big smile on my face,” Mulcrone said. “He said ‘Coach, I’d like to play this year.’ I didn’t hesitate to say ‘Yeah, get in the pool.’ ”

In his first season as head coach of the Crusaders, Mulcrone suddenly had an unexpected huge asset: a 6-foot-6 goalie.

Kennedy, a standout basketball player for Brother Rice who has agreed to walk-on to the basketball squad at Loyola next season, hadn’t played water polo since eighth grade.

For his senior season, he figured, “Why not?”

Season Pass: Talented Tandem Witte, Cira Putting Brother Rice Lacrosse on Map

Brother Rice’s Brennan Cira (left) and Tom Witte have played lacrosse together since the Crusaders program was formed in 2011. | Stacia Timonere~For Sun Times Media

Since their sophomore years, Tom Witte and Brennan Cira have played side-by-side on the Brother Rice lacrosse team. Both midfielders, the two have been the leaders of a Crusaders program that formed during the spring of 2011. Back then, they barely knew one another; now they are inseparable.

Witte and Cira, both seniors, make up the most formidable one-two punch in the state. According to the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association, Witte ranks second in the state with 41 goals, while Cira is fourth in Illinois with 21 assists. The combination is surprising for several reasons: They are playing for a school that has historically produced great players on the football field, not in lacrosse. As midfielders, they have defensive responsibilities to go along with their knack for finding the back of the net.

According to Brother Rice coach Chris Hilliard, Witte and Cira are very similar.
