The 16th Annual Larry Platt Essay Contest Winners Announced!
Through the Platt Family Foundation, Mary Ann and Larry Platt ’68 have provided more than a quarter million dollars in scholarship funds for 154 students since 2003.
In May, 70 members of the Class of 2020 competed for the scholarship. Since 2003, 1,154 Brother Rice students have been willing to sit for the 90-minute contest at the end of their sophomore year. Writing skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum at Brother Rice, with an added emphasis during the first or second semester of sophomore year.
The first place winner, Declan Docherty ’20 of Mt. Greenwood earned two $4,000 scholarships for his junior and senior year. Second place winner, Stephen Walczak ’20 of Oak Lawn earned two $2,500 scholarships, and third place winner J Ronan Dolan ’20 of Beverly earned two $1,500 scholarships for their junior and senior year.
Special Mention Awards of $250 were presented to Grant Gierhahn ’20 of West Beverly and Luke Onoroto ‘20 of Mt. Greenwood.
Honorable Mention Awards of $100 went to Dan Golon ’20 of Oak Lawn, Owen Greybill ’20 of Tinley Park, Alexander MacFarlane ’20 of Evergreen Park, and Jeremy Zemgulys ’20 of Beverly.
