New Brother Rice Head Swimming Coach Mike Murphy ‘89 Dives In

2021-06-02T11:16:00-05:00

Competitive swimmers know a boatload of techniques to keep their race-times down, and they apply many of these before they even hit the water.  A clean, high-velocity entry into the pool off the block is one important aspect.  On the initial dive, swimmers attempt to propel themselves the optimal distance through the air before breaking the surface of the water and starting their strokes: the smaller the splash, the less the resistance, which can shave precious time off the race.

When a former Crusader Swimming Champion and coach such as Mike Murphy comes home, however, there is a […]

Brother Rice High School is pleased to announce that 36 Brother Rice students from the graduating Class of 2021 have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars.

On average, approximately 10% of graduates from approved high schools are announced as Illinois State Scholars each year. This year, Brother Rice boasts 26% of students from the Class of 2021 as Illinois State Scholars and is proud to have, once again, the most boys named State Scholars from Catholic high schools on the Southside.

These students possess a strong academic potential and are chosen based on a combination of good […]

Brother Rice High School is proud to announce Mrs. Amy Guzek as the new Director of the FOCUS program.

Guzek will take over the reins from longtime FOCUS Director, Mrs. Christina Forbes, who is retiring this spring after 38 years of service.  “Words cannot express the impact that Ms. Forbes has had on hundreds of Crusaders over the past thirty years,” Associate Principal Mrs. Karen Van Assen said, “but we are also excited about the new direction of the FOCUS program under Mrs. Guzek’s leadership.”  Mrs. Guzek has over a decade of experience teaching in the public school […]

Brother Rice to Hold Graduation Ceremony on Tom Mitchell Field

2021-05-10T08:58:49-05:00

As the 2020-21 academic session comes to an end, we look back at what has been another challenging year for our Crusaders. They have had to adapt to a hybrid schedule, adhere to ever-changing guidelines, and keep up with their studies and activities.  Despite the volatility, overall, it has been a successful year, and we are excited to celebrate our seniors in the coming weeks. The seniors’ last day of school will be on Friday, May 7, and then it is on to the stage!

Last year, graduation looked much different than in past years. Smaller ceremonies were […]

Let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  AMEN

God of mercy and compassion, thank you for the extraordinary life, witness, and ministry of Religious Brothers in our Church. Today is the Feast of St. Hugo of Grenoble

Today is Holy Thursday

Let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  AMEN

Loving Provider,
you gather me in this upper room with your son,
to be fed by your love.
At that supper, Jesus told us to “love one another”
and I know that is the heart of his gift,
his sacrifice for me.
I ask that I might find the source of my own heart,
the meaning for my own life,
in that Eucharist.
Guide me to the fullness of your […]

Brother Rice Taps Coach Tim Vaughan as New Head Golf Coach

2021-03-04T11:01:57-06:00

Last week, as Chicago lay dormant under a few feet of February snow, new Brother Rice High School head coach Tim Vaughan met with students on two separate afternoons to introduce himself and discuss local Evans Scholarship opportunities through the Ridge CC Caddie Program.

Wait… golf?

That’s right.  What better time to dream of the links and talk about the next golf season, especially when you can throw in information about a Chick Evans scholarship and free college tuition?  It seems like Coach Vaughan always keeps his mind on the game, even in record snowfall.

A […]

Hail Lyons Crusader Clan –  25 From Tom ’63 to Shane ’28

Brother Rice High School’s ability to help form young men of faith and to pass on the Catholic tradition in the name of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers flows from the heart of its mission.  The soul of the school is made up of thousands of current and former Crusaders who have called the hallowed halls at 99th and Pulaski home.  With almost two-thirds of a century worth of graduates, it is no surprise to see a number of Southside families who have proudly waved their […]
