Alumni Spotlight – Brian Conlisk ‘16

By Jack Zampillo ‘18

Can you imagine what it would be like to spend five days underwater? To be in control of a naval aircraft thousands of feet in the sky? Me neither.

For Brian Conlisk, Class of 2016, these extraordinary circumstances are just another day in the office.

Following his time at Rice, Conlisk was accepted into Purdue University’s aerospace engineering program and immediately enrolled into Naval ROTC. He recalls training about 4 times a week, along with learning the ins and outs of what the U.S. Navy expects from those willing to make the sacrifice.

Alumni Spotlight – Declan Kennedy ‘15

By: Jack Zampillo ‘18

Declan Kennedy and music go together like maroon and orange – a perfect pairing.

Kennedy, Class of 2015, has built his musical prowess from a young age, performing in numerous local shows with the family band “Kennedy Compound” and actively participating in the barbershop quartet and choir.

Declan graduated from Brother Rice with honors and sprouted into the music business, attending Belmont University in Nashville. As a songwriting major, he wrote and published two studio albums that have thousands of interactions on Spotify. When discussing a favorite song he’s written, there wasn’t much hesitancy.

Alumni Spotlight – Brendan Reidy ’17

The Crusader community is like a family: close-knit, influential, and united by a love for Brother Rice High School.

Family members move away, explore greater opportunities, and create their own paths, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t catch up once in a while!

“Alumni Spotlight” will highlight some of Brother Rice’s most distinguished alumni and show the impact four years at 99th and Pulaski can have on one’s future.

Brendan Reidy’s alarm wakes him up every morning with the message, “Time to entertain the tri-states!” Becoming a sports journalist is a dream turned into […]

Exciting Changes this Summer as Brother Rice High School “Heeds the Call” for the Future

As it closes the Chromebook on one of the most unique and memorable school years in its history, Brother Rice High School in Chicago looks forward to a summer full of improvements. As Chicagoans know, with summer comes construction season, and, this year, the corner of 99th and Pulaski is no exception.

Indeed, as the cranes and bulldozers can attest, “Phase One” of Brother Rice High School’s Heed the Call Campaign is in full swing.

“Over two years ago, we began to assess our needsranging from our physical plant […]

The Standard: Virtual Career Day at Brother Rice

By Danny Wallace ‘21

Career Day at Brother Rice is one of the many events that seniors look forward to during their final semester. Many students truly enjoy the advice that the alumni speakers give as well as the detailed descriptions of their daily tasks.

But this year, Career Day looked a lot different than usual.

Abiding by COVID-19 protocols, every speaker talked to their assigned class through Zoom or Google Meet. As a result, the only interaction could come through the students that were e-learning, limiting the amount of questions asked and hurting the fluidity of each presentation. Although these setbacks took away […]

The Standard: Brother Rice alumni perform with senior Chris Staszak

By Sean Mahanes ‘21

Earlier this month, the City Lights Orchestra, a group of alumni led by Richard Daniels ’78, visited Brother Rice to perform with senior singer Chris Staszak. This musical collaboration certainly did not disappoint, as the group played beautiful renditions of “Smile” and other songs.

Chris said, “It was a huge honor performing with the City Lights Orchestra. The whole production was quick and efficient, and the orchestra were very talented. I had an amazing experience with such talented musicians, and I hope one day we can perform together again.”

Daniels is the founder and president of the City Lights Orchestra, […]

All in the Family: Hail Lyons Crusader Clan –  25 From Tom ’63 to Shane ’28

Hail Lyons Crusader Clan –  25 From Tom ’63 to Shane ’28

Brother Rice High School’s ability to help form young men of faith and to pass on the Catholic tradition in the name of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers flows from the heart of its mission.  The soul of the school is made up of thousands of current and former Crusaders who have called the hallowed halls at 99th and Pulaski home.  With almost two-thirds of a century worth of graduates, it is no surprise to see a number of Southside families who have proudly waved their […]

James E. O’Connor ’67: Challenging Beginnings Toward Becoming World’s Most Admired Garbage Man

On January 28, 1970, Jim O’Connor ’67 was only 20 years old when he lost his dad.  He said he was “overwhelmed” that such a thing could happen.  In a highly publicized tragedy, Chicago Police Department Lieutenant James E O’Connor spared the life of an armed robber in an attempt to disarm the 20-year old gunman, who fired during the struggle and killed the 62-year old O’Connor.  Lieutenant O’Connor is remembered as “a hero in every aspect, not only because he spared a young man’s life, whom he could have shot and killed, but also by refusing […]
