The 2022-23 cross country team made history.

We are the 7th team in school history to qualify for state and regional champions for the fourth time in five years.

Sophomore Gavin O’Connor said, “As a team we had some ups and downs, but we were able to achieve what we wanted both individually and as a team.”

There were some rough patches, but I always knew we were capable of something big. The tipping point was the Peoria High Invite at Detweiller Park. We had an amazing day with six out of seven personal bests. Junior Danny Macis said, “The season […]

The Standard: We’re Not Done Yet

It’s always a great day when you have the opportunity to race at Detweiller Park.

On Saturday, the cross country team finished 12th place out of 41 teams at Detweiller Park in Peoria Ill. Personally, I think we could have done better as a team, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

The meet day was different than usual. The team went out for a steak dinner on Friday night and stayed in a hotel. Although this is a fun team bonding exercise, sometimes getting thrown out of your routine before competing can result in a poor […]

The Standard: Cross Country State Series

2020-11-19T18:09:29-06:00

By Sean Deane ‘21

The past three weeks have been very exciting for the cross country team as they competed in a very unconventional state series.

October 24 marked the regional championship held at the Ag School.  In the days leading up to this race, the coaches devised a plan for the team to beat an equally matched Richard’s squad.  Our top two runners were to stick with their first, and our third through sixth were to stay with their fourth man.

The plan went better than expected.  Eddie Burke and Mikey Corcoran both beat Richard’s David Olmos convincingly.  Connor Melean beat Richard’s fourth […]

On Friday, Oct. 10, the cross-country team hosted its first ever Senior Night.  It was their second race on their new home course and the weather conditions were perfect.  Parents, coaches and runners alike experienced an event to remember.

After the gun went off to start the girls’ varsity race, the Brother Rice seniors and their parents walked out to the football field to begin the Senior Night Ceremony.  Each Crusader brought an orange rose out to their mother and was congratulated by Mr. Alberts, Mr. Donahue, and Mr. Prunty.

Senior Eddie Burke said that he really appreciated the event […]

The Standard: The Saturday Morning Showdown

August, September, and October. Every Rice student knows that the fall season is arguably the most anticipated of the school year when it comes to sports. You have football, soccer, golf, and cross country, with each athlete working hard to improve themselves for personal fulfillment and for the sake of their team.

However, things are slightly different this year.

Slightly is an understatement; things are very different this season. For starters, half of the fall sports technically aren’t even fall sports anymore. Football and soccer have joined the spring sports, while golf and cross country remain.

As if it couldn’t be […]

As a cross country runner or distance runner in track, one of the hardest things to do is stay in shape in the offseason. Especially during the cold and snowy winter, it may seem nearly impossible to train how you do during the fall, spring, and summer.

But thanks to The Crusader Cross Country Club, or C4 for short, you no longer have to worry! The C4 club is open to all who are interested in staying or getting in shape for a sport, or anyone interested in distance running.

Run by Coach Wazio, Coach Swynenburg, and Coach Muth, this […]

The Standard: Brother Rice Cross Country Takes on State

2019-11-26T10:51:16-06:00

By Declan McGuire ‘20

On Friday, Nov. 8, the Brother Rice cross country team traveled down to Detweiller Park in Peoria, Illinois, to compete in the IHSA 2A Cross Country Championship.

As exciting as this was, one of the more exciting parts was the ride down. Getting to leave school early is always a plus, and getting to stop at Subway as well was a nice treat by Coaches Wazio and Swynenburg.

With lots of time to kill and team bonding to be done, the trip started off a little crazy, with us playing games like Crazy 8s and Psych for a large chunk […]

The Standard: Jimmy Maguire’s Last Race at State

By Declan McGuire ‘20

The IHSA cross country finals may be one of the most attended high school sporting events, but not many get the opportunity to run in it.

And even fewer can say that they were able to run in it after only doing cross country for two years.

Over the weekend, Jimmy Maguire and the cross country team traveled down to Detweiller Park in Peoria, Illinois, to race in the 2A Cross Country State Championship.

“I’m really looking forward to this meet, and not just because we get to leave school early,” said Maguire. “I know people aren’t expecting much from us […]
