The Standard: Crusaders Lacrosse Struggles to Bounce Back

By Bryce Tinsley ‘23

The Brother Rice Crusaders traveled to Lombard to play against the Montini Catholic Broncos. The Crusaders lost 6-1, falling to a record of 1-6.

The Crusaders are having a rough season, winning only one of their first seven.

Junior Jack Leong said, “It’s frustrating to say the least. Going 1-6 is not what we wanted for sure, but that’s behind us now. I think this’ll scare some of the younger guys to go a little harder at practice; I know it made me play harder. Nobody wants to have a losing record, and it boils down to being on us […]

The Standard: Varsity Lacrosse Continues the Season

By Kevin Murphy ‘22

Brother Rice lacrosse has had a shaky season so far with some bad losses to worse teams. There is a consistent theme to all of their games; a slow first half but fighting to stay in the game during the second half.

The previous three games have all ended in losses. In arguably the worst loss of the season, the Crusaders were defeated 14-4 against Hillcrest, with most of the Crusader goals coming in the final quarter.

“We were not ready to play after spring break at all,” said senior Timmy Gavin. “We were super rusty and we paid the […]

The Standard: Brother Rice Lacrosse Starts the Season Strong

By Kevin Murphy ‘22

Brother Rice lacrosse has started their season off strong with an early win against Kenwood Academy on Tuesday, March 13. The final score read 6-4 Crusaders, with the game being extremely close in the fourth quarter after the Broncos came back from a deficit to keep the game alive.

Quick to score for the Crusaders in the first period was senior and captain Gavin Ward. About two minutes after taking their 1-0 lead, Ward scored once again with a 20-yard snipe.

“For some reason the defense was giving me way too much space,” said Ward. “I just decided to wind […]

The Brother Rice lacrosse team is looking forward to a pretty good season this year.

After hiring Head Coach Thomas Haggerty at the start of the 2021 season, the Crusaders have had a complete rebuild of their program.

After the first day of practice of the 2022 season, Coach Haggerty said, “I am very excited for this year’s season. There is a lot more energy than last year’s first practice.”

Last year the Crusaders did not have a great season. They were below a 500 record along with being short on players.

The Standard: BR Lacrosse Coach Tom Haggerty on 2022 season

By Jacob Wizgird ‘22

In 2021, Brother Rice’s JV and varsity lacrosse team had an excellent season. The group quickly exceeded expectations anyone had for them, including 1st year head coach Thomas Haggerty.

“The seniors raised the maturity levels of the younger players,” said Haggerty about the young 2021 team. “What I am incredibly proud of the team is that we did not have a single penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Our character told other teams who we were, and we weren’t going to be like them or play like them.”

The Crusaders made it to the IHSA playoffs and won their first round matchup […]

The Brother Rice lacrosse program is excited to prove themselves this year.

There is a lot of energy and heart in the team this year. Many fresh faces have an opportunity to make something for themselves whereas many of the older players want to leave behind their legacy.

Coach Luke said, “Despite our low numbers, I think our team has a great chance to win some games this season. We have a lot of heart and some younger players with outstanding potential. With the seniors being excellent examples, I think this season will be a shock to those who doubt […]
