On Monday, April 7, the Brother Rice rugby team kicked off their season with a challenging matchup against Fenwick High School, ultimately falling 47-5 in their opening match. While the game was not in the Crusaders’ favor, the game offered many valuable lessons, especially for many new and first year players.

Over this past weekend, Crusader rugby traveled down to Georgetown, Illinois, to play against La Salette Academy. The Crusaders fell just short the past few years, so this was a highly anticipated game.

Four year rugby player Tommy Hanlon said, “This game was really important to us. We badly wanted to finally take home a win against a team we have not been able to beat.”

On Saturday, April 13, the Brother Rice rugby team opened their season in an eventful game against the Chicago Lions Rugby Club. For a lot of the players on the team, it would be their first time playing in a varsity rugby regular season game.

Junior Cian Desmond said, “It was my first varsity start, and I was a little nervous. Still, I couldn’t wait for the first kickoff.”

The Brother Rice rugby team was supposed to play Mount Carmel on March 22, but due to the weather, the game was canceled. The team was disappointed in the cancellation of the game, however they are excited for the game to be rescheduled.

On Saturday, March 16, the Brother Rice rugby team kicked off their season with a friendly exhibition match against Bishop Dwenger High School of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The day started early for the team, as they left at 7:45 a.m. for a three-hour bus ride across Indiana.

Senior Diego Hernandez said, “Before the game, I was nervous for my first start. I wanted to hit someone as hard as I could.”

As the new rugby season is underway, Brother Rice alumnus and head coach Jack Sullivan is looking for the new starting 15. Brother Rice rugby has a reputation for being a powerhouse every year, and the team looks forward to continuing the tradition.

New member of the team, senior T.J McNichols said, “Rugby is unlike any other sport I have ever played. There is a lot more conditioning than I expected, but I am willing to do whatever I need for this team’s success.”

On Wednesday, March 29, the varsity rugby team took on the Morton West Mustangs at Tom Mitchell Field. The Crusaders have been dominating opposing teams all season, and this game was expected to be no different.

Senior Jack Welniak said, ¨We are a very talented team. I love getting down and gritty with my boys.”

Last Thursday, the Crusaders took on the undefeated Neuqua Valley Wildcats at home.

The Crusaders beat the Wildcats 26-18 in a hard fought battle. Tries were scored by Rolando Sepulveda, Henry Ivers, Carter McAlilly, and Jack Mallon. Jack Welniak had a great day on the tee, going 3 for 4 on the extra points.

Mallon and Ivers both had break through runs which gave the Crusaders a big advantage in the first half. However, the Wildcats capitalized their performance with two quick tries near the end of the first half.

This past Friday the Brother Rice Rugby team faced off with the Marist Redhawks at Tom Mitchell Field. The final score of the match up was 12-12 resulting in a tie.

The weather at kickoff consisted of sleet which covered the field in slush. The temperatures were also very frigid and affected much of the play throughout the night.
