On Wednesday, March 29, the varsity rugby team took on the Morton West Mustangs at Tom Mitchell Field. The Crusaders have been dominating opposing teams all season, and this game was expected to be no different.

Senior Jack Welniak said, ¨We are a very talented team. I love getting down and gritty with my boys.”

From the beginning kickoff, the Crusaders controlled the game from start to finish. They won in all aspects of the game, claiming a 63-0 victory over the Mustangs.

The Standard: Brother Rice Rugby Takes Down Neuqua Valley

Last Thursday, the Crusaders took on the undefeated Neuqua Valley Wildcats at home.

The Crusaders beat the Wildcats 26-18 in a hard fought battle. Tries were scored by Rolando Sepulveda, Henry Ivers, Carter McAlilly, and Jack Mallon. Jack Welniak had a great day on the tee, going 3 for 4 on the extra points.

Mallon and Ivers both had break through runs which gave the Crusaders a big advantage in the first half. However, the Wildcats capitalized their performance with two quick tries near the end of the first half.

This past Friday the Brother Rice Rugby team faced off with the Marist Redhawks at Tom Mitchell Field. The final score of the match up was 12-12 resulting in a tie.

The weather at kickoff consisted of sleet which covered the field in slush. The temperatures were also very frigid and affected much of the play throughout the night.

Junior forward Nick Dorn said, “It was challenging to run and make plays while the temperature dropped and as the field became soaked.”

Brother Rice rugby is finally back in the mix this year. For the first time since 2019, the team is able to compete for a spot in the playoffs.

Shouts filled the air as we poured into the gym, with everyone immediately ready to start playing.

With the majority of the roster also on the football team, attendance was low. This low attendance, along with the hybrid system this year making it hard to recruit, as well as the cancellation of last year’s season due to coronavirus, underclassmen were especially lacking.

It’s that time of year again Crusader sports fans! The most storied program at Brother Rice takes the pitch once again this Friday.

Crusader Rugby Crushes Marist

The Brother Rice rugby team was victorious last night over CRCC rival Marist with a score of 48-5. The Crusaders were led by the 3 tries of Ryan “Del Pueblo” Schickel and the hard running of Brendan Hosty, Justin Garcia, and Evan “Heavy E” Kirtz. Tim Desmond offered surgical kicks for conversions as well as in game play backed up by the support for of the Money Man of the game, Luke Swiatek. The Crusaders will continue their quest for a Catholic League championship on Wednesday, May 9, when they take on Fenwick at Triton College.
