Competitive swimmers know a boatload of techniques to keep their race-times down, and they apply many of these before they even hit the water.  A clean, high-velocity entry into the pool off the block is one important aspect.  On the initial dive, swimmers attempt to propel themselves the optimal distance through the air before breaking the surface of the water and starting their strokes: the smaller the splash, the less the resistance, which can shave precious time off the race.

When a former Crusader Swimming Champion and coach such as Mike Murphy comes home, however, there is a […]

On Saturday morning, the Brother Rice swim team took to the “swamp” to square off with St. Ignatius. The Crusaders were unable to continue the momentum from last weekend’s win against De La Salle, suffering a tough home loss to the Wolf Pack on both the varsity and junior varsity levels. The team now enters the final week of regular season play with a respectable record of 2-2.

Despite the loss, senior star Kiernan Schumacher turned in a great performance, taking first place in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. The senior leader voiced his pleasure with his team’s effort.

Kiernan […]

This night was special because it was Senior Night, where all the swimming seniors can reminisce about all they have done the past four years and finish their last home meet with a bang. These seniors include Owen Greybill, Andrew Cwik, Seth Miller, Ryan Kopale, and TJ Murphy.

Senior swimmer Owen Greybill commented that the Brother Rice Swim Program. […]

The Beverly Revew: Rice’s Miller finishes 4th at state

The Beverly Review

Standing behind the blocks waiting to swim for a state championship on Feb. 23, Br. Rice junior Seth Miller felt his nerves start to churn.

He looked around the New Trier High School pool and saw hundreds of fans packed into the bleachers surrounding the pool. The nerves were there, but he intended to use them to his advantage in the final heat of the 100-yard butterfly.

That strategy worked, and Miller finished fourth in :49.28.

“I felt the nerves, but that’s a good thing,” Miller said. “It gets your adrenaline going, and it helps […]

The Beverly Review

By Tim O’Brien

Seth Miller got a taste of the state swimming and diving meet last year.

Now in his junior year, the Br. Rice swimmer is hoping to go back for seconds in a big way.

After qualifying individually last season in the 100-yard butterfly, Miller is eyeing a return to the state meet in two individual events and, potentially, with a relay team comprised of young, talented Crusaders.

“It was a lot of fun making it last year, but I plan on going down for both events and a relay,” Miller said. “My times from last year, […]
