The Standard: Pete Struck Eagle Classic

On Thursday, the track team competed at Sandburg for the Pete Struck Eagle Classic. This is one of the most highly anticipated outdoor meets of the year, with some of the best competition from 23 schools.

What I like most about this meet is the chance to see where we rank in certain events. With sectionals and Catholic League right around the corner, it is a necessity to envision ourselves in the midst of it with high competition. We are able to see what events are our strengths and which are our weaknesses.

What has stood out to me the […]

The Standard: Rice Relays Field Events

This past Friday Brother Rice hosted their annual Rice Relays track and field event. It was a great day all around for each event.

Senior Marcus Kennedy put everything he had on the line for the “Running Ugly” Crusaders. Kennedy finished first in the high jump, second for the long jump, and third in the triple jump. Kennedy even attempted a meet record in the high jump and almost had it but fell short.

Preparing for things like that where you only get one chance to complete, it could sure shake you up a bit and make you nervous.

“Before […]

The Standard: Crusader Duel

The Crusader Duel meet is the perfect way to kick off the outdoor track season. It is a friendly competition against your peers.

The six team captains were divided into two teams. Teams Walsh, Heilmann and Worthington were in white, and teams Bowes, Kennedy and Morrison were in black. Each team took turns drafting players until no one was left. Bragging rights were on the line, along with first dibs at pizza.

Afterwards the competitiveness in each of us came out. Many of us argued over who has the better team and who would come out as champions.

On Thursday, the […]

The Standard: Pole Vault School Record at MVP Vibe Fest

2023-03-10T12:42:07-06:00

Congratulations are in order for senior Joey Heilmann after he broke the pole vault school record. Joey, with a pole vault height of 13 foot 11 and ¼ inches, broke the previous school record set eight years earlier back in 2015 by Chris Grosskopf by almost a foot.

Joey originally joined the track team to do the long jump, but after an injury two weeks before the end of his sophomore season, he was put into the pole vault at sectionals. After only two weeks of practice, Joey got over 10 feet 6 inches. This was two and a […]

The Standard: ICOPS Invitational

“It’s my favorite indoor track meet all year,” said sophomore Gavin O’Connor.

On Sunday, the entire track and field team traveled to Lewis University to compete at ICOPS invitational. It is the first real meet of the year with good competition from all catholic schools. You have the chance to prove to yourself, teammates and coaches that you can be relied upon for future meets like Catholic League or sectionals.

It was a good outing; we finished 5th out of 22 schools, but that’s not where we want to be.  It is still really early in the season so we […]

On Tuesday, April 12, Brother Rice held an open invitational track meet. Brother Rice welcomed St. Laurence, Leo, and Solorio Academy. It was a great day for the young athletes to compete.

The Standard: 5th Annual Crusader Duel Track Meet

On Friday, the track and field team was split in half for the 5th Annual Crusader Duel. Captains Julius Lujano and Jack Antonson of Team J squared off against captains Sean Maloney and Sean McNally of Team SM.

On Wednesday, the captains split and drafted their teams. A lot of trash talk occurred in the week leading up to the meet.

“We’re by far the more athletic team. The result won’t end up being close,” said Rory Cusack ‘23.

Members of Team J felt a little different. Boasting the top athletes in the shot, pole vault, and hurdles, Team J thought […]

By Sean Maloney ’22

On Saturday morning, the shot put throwers from the track and field team made their way up to Eisenhower and competed in a throwers only meet.

Blessed with warm weather, the meet was moved from the indoor track to the outdoor track.

“It was a great environment with beautiful weather,” said junior Troy Bever. “I’m really looking forward to the outdoor season.”

This was the first time the Crusaders threw outside. Lately, they’ve been throwing at indoor meets. Maybe the change of scenery was the boost they needed.

Freshman Charlie Mendez recorded his personal best in his young throwing career. Mendez won […]
