The Standard: Freshman Crusaders Excel in Wrestling Down State

This year’s Brother Rice wrestling team made history by becoming the first team in program history to place down state. The team took 4th in state.

The wrestling team had four starting freshmen: James Lotito, Jonathan Harris, Frank Miceli, and Danny Costello.

All four freshmen qualified for the individual state tournament, with Danny Costello placing 6th. After the team qualified for the team state championship, these four young men all played a huge role.

When the team faced Mahomet Seymour on Feb. 23 down state, all four men won their matches, helping the team to make it to the semi-finals.

On Friday, Feb. 16, the Brother Rice wrestling team beat Mahomet Seymour in the quarter finals of the IHSA Team State Tournament with a score of 36-27. This was the first time the Brother Rice wrestling team has ever advanced to the semifinals, which solidified them as a top four team in state for class 2A.

On Feb. 20, Brother Rice wrestling competed against Oak Forest, with a final score of 44-27. Brother Rice was down 21-12 with one wrestler left. Sophomore Logan Connors got the lead for the Crusaders after his pin.

The Standard: The Crusaders at State

The Brother Rice wrestling team traveled to Champaign to compete in this year’s individual state tournament. The Crusaders had an impressive nine state qualifiers, four of which are only freshmen.

Despite an impressive showing, only one Crusader was able to place in the tournament.

Freshman Danny Costello represented the team well, placing 6th overall in the 2A 175 lb weight class. Danny had one pin in the tournament and finished with a record of 3-3.

The Standard: Crusader Wrestling Wins Regionals for the Fourth Year in a Row

Last Saturday, the Brother Rice wrestling team traveled to Evergreen Park High School for the first round of the IHSA wrestling tournament.

The Crusaders scored 238 team points and secured a spot for team sectionals later in the season.

Junior James Crane said, “The team is going into sectionals feeling confident but also level headed. Our team goal is to beat nine state qualifiers.”

Thirteen Crusaders placed top three and secured a spot in sectionals. Major help came from Oliver Davis, Frank Micelli, Patrick Gilhooly, Colin Goggin, Daniel Costello, and James Crane who all took first place.

The Brother Rice Crusaders wrestling team had a home match on Jan. 25 against the St.Ignatius Wolfpack. It was a special night for all five seniors: Pat Gilhooly, James Bennett, Jim Bowes, Billy Jacobson, and Mac Murzyn. They were celebrated for senior night with the annual giving of flowers to their lovely moms.

On February 18, sophomore Bobby Conway ‘25 got a chance to put his name in the books. In what was anticipated to be an early exit for the young mat man, he fought differently.

“Going into the match I wasn’t worried about losing because I was such an underdog throughout the state tournament,” said Conway.

Bobby defeated all odds and truly showed how to wear the maroon and orange.

Congratulations to the Brother Rice wrestling team on a great season culminating with another IHSA Individual State Champion and back-to-back IHSA Dual Team State appearances! This past Tuesday the Crusaders beat Lemont 38-29 in the Class 2A dual-team sectionals. The Crusaders are heading to team state for the second year in a row.
