On February 18, sophomore Bobby Conway ‘25 got a chance to put his name in the books. In what was anticipated to be an early exit for the young mat man, he fought differently.

“Going into the match I wasn’t worried about losing because I was such an underdog throughout the state tournament,” said Conway.

Bobby defeated all odds and truly showed how to wear the maroon and orange.

“I knew I was going to make it to the finals but it wasn’t going to be easy.”

Heading into the biggest stage of his life so far, Bobby had no doubt. Having […]

The Standard: Crusader Wrestling Continues to Impress

This past Friday and Saturday the Brother Rice wrestling team wrestled off at sectionals. The Crusaders battled through much adversity and are now sending four men down to compete at state.

The first to qualify was sophomore Bobby Conway. All season long, Bobby has been battling injuries and has felt as if he never had a chance to prove himself. Almost fully healthy and ready to go for sectionals, Bobby had something to prove. Going into sectionals, Bobby was an underdog, but he knew what he was capable of. Bobby had a gritty performance and battled to earn 1st […]

On Saturday Jan. 28, the Crusader mat men traveled to Fenwick to compete in the JV Chicago Catholic League Championship.

Before the meet, sophomore Danny Tait said, “Our mindset for the meet was to win. We were all locked in and ready to wrestle.” The mat men did just that by dominating every opponent in the way. They totaled 273 team points and finished in first place. They outscored the second place Fenwick by over 50 points.

All thirteen Crusaders placed at least top five in their respective weight classes. There were six first place finishes by Oliver Davis (120), […]

On January 21, the wrestling Crusaders packed their bags as they headed down to Marmion Academy for the Chicago Catholic League Championship.

The Crusaders went up against some of the top teams in the state. Junior Mac Murzyn said, “This was the toughest conference tournament in the Midwest.” Everyone there can play at the collegiate level. The Crusaders needed to have a lot of grit and determination if they wanted to be successful.

“Going into the meet, we didn’t know what to expect, other than there weren’t going to be easy matches,” Murzyn said. He mentioned that the big thing […]

The Standard: A Historical End to a Memorable Season

On Friday, Feb. 25, the Crusader mat men were defeated by the tough Mahomet Seymour team. This marked the first Brother Rice appearance at the annual IHSA team state dual tournament. Although the Crusaders ended their season with a loss, that does not take away from their memorable season.

At the beginning of the season, not many people expected this team to make it as far as they did. Obstacles included missing a head coach, many young faces, and the football team making it to the semifinals which forced four starting wrestlers to join late. The Crusaders certainly exceeded […]

The Standard: Tom Bennett – New Face at the Top of the Podium

One of the hardest things to do in sports is to win. Something harder than that is to win consistently. That’s exactly what senior Tom Bennett had to do when entering his first match at the State Championship.

Bennett made light work of his first two matches on the first day of the three-day tournament at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois. Then, he came across his biggest challenge yet. He would have to wrestle the number one seeded wrestler in the state.

Going into the match Tom knew what lay ahead.

“My opponent was […]

On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Crusaders won their second straight Regional Championship. All 13 wrestlers from Brother Rice who entered the regional placed in the top three at their weight classes. This means that all 13 Crusaders will be wrestling in sectionals at Hinsdale South this weekend.

Brother Rice dominated the competition by racking in a total of 242 team points. The Crusaders were led by six individual champs including Bobby Conway, Al Perez, Chuck Connolly, Nate Chirillo, Tommy Bennett, and Gabino Perez. They also finished with five runner-ups and two third places.

This season has certainly been a successful […]

The Standard: Bennett Looking to Finish the Mission

2022-01-20T21:04:43-06:00

By Tony Macellaio ‘22

After three years of wrestling in high school Tommy Bennett is still chasing something. Bennett has qualified to state every year throughout his high school tenure. He has yet to stand on the podium as a champion, but something is different this year.

As a senior captain of the team, Bennett has embraced his role and made some major adjustments to his approach this season.

With COVID-19 causing an unusual wrestling season last year it was easy for athletes to slack off and lose leverage on other competitors.

Tommy did the opposite.

Morning workouts became a usual start to the day before […]

The Standard: Crusader Wrestling

2020-02-29T14:06:08-06:00

By Declan McGuire ‘20

As an impressive season nears its end, I figured there was no better time than now to draw a Crusader wrestler.

With a serious chance to go down to state, all the Brother Rice wrestlers are working hard to make it there, but two that stand out are seniors Tom Crane and Michael Loughney.

These varsity wrestlers are the definition of hard work and dedication, and I hope to see it pay off at Sectionals and the state meet.

In the drawing above, I did my best to make the Crusader resemble the Hulk. I started off the draw by looking […]
