Today’s Women’s History announcement:

Janet Guthrie is the first woman to drive in the Indy 500, 1977
Guthrie was an aerospace engineer, training to be an astronaut, when she was cut from the space program because she didn’t have her PhD. She turned to car racing instead and became the first woman to qualify for the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. Mechanical difficulties forced her out of the 1977 Indy race, but the next year she finished in ninth place (with a broken wrist!). The helmet and suit that Guthrie wore in her first Indy race are on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.

In recognition of Black History Month, today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. More than 50 years after his assassination in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered as an activist, a prominent leader in the civil rights movement, a pioneering historical Black figure, and a wordsmith. His impact is still felt today, as his daughter carries on his legacy, and we continue to look to him for strength when the fight for racial equality seems unending. Throughout his years of public service, the Nobel Peace Prize winner wrote and delivered speeches—the most notable being his 1963 “I Have a Dream” address—that provided wisdom that still holds true. One of  Martin Luther King, Jr.’s most famous quotes about kindness, courage, and unity.  “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

As you get ready for next school year, be sure to add Music Appreciation to your schedule. We’ll cover all things music including topics such as why Kanye’s “808s and Heartbreak” is one of the most influential albums in modern hip-hop history. See Mr. Z with questions, Hot Diggity Dog.

ATTENTION STUDENTS: The bookstore is having a sale with brand new prices! There will be a table set up outside the cafeteria during lunch hours with Brother Rice shirts, socks, flags, and masks. Cash payments only…you won’t want to miss these prices. See Mr. Zampillo in the bookstore with any questions.

ATTENTION SENIORS: There are three excellent scholarship opportunities available to you:

  • The Orland Township Scholarship Foundation is offering scholarships to graduating seniors who live within the boundaries of Orland Township.  This scholarship can be applied to a college, university, trade or vocational school.
  • The Oak-Lawn-Hometown PTA Council will award two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to attend a community college, university or trade school. Students must rank in the upper 50% of their class at the end of their first semester of senior year and must have attended at least four school years in the District 123 school system.
  • The A. Franklin Pilchard Scholarship deadline is January 31st. Applicants must plan to attend a college or university in the state of Illinois, must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and must demonstrate financial need.  If you plan to apply for this scholarship, please submit your transcript release form to the Counseling Office no later than Wednesday, January 27th.

Applications for these scholarships are available through Naviance or in the Counseling Office.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling is hosting 8 virtual fairs this semester.  Their first virtual fair is Sunday, January 31st from 1:00 – 7:00 pm ET.  Students can drop in on Zoom sessions offered by hundreds of colleges.  This is a great opportunity to start exploring college options.  Please stop by the Counseling Office for registration information.

Students who plan to take the ACT or SAT test this spring have an opportunity to take a free virtual practice test for one of these exams.  StudyPoint is offering the practice tests virtually and students who participate will receive a free score analysis.  Multiple tests are run every week and if you are interested, please see your counselor for more information.

The Anti-Cruelty Society, in partnership with The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, is offering a program for high school students with an interest in veterinary medicine or animal science-related fields.  The program is from September 2021 through April 2022.  Please see your counselor for more information.

The Alsip Park District is now hiring students for summer employment.  The positions available are lifeguards, concessions staff, pool attendants, day camp team members or athletic site supervisor.  Information can be found in the Counseling Office or on the job bulletin board outside the Dean’s Office.

Attention students!  Brother Rice will be hosting a VIRTUAL IMMERSION to Lima, Peru during Catholic Schools Week (February 1st through the 5th).  In exchange for your $8 dollar donation, you will be able to dress down from February 1st through February 8th.  For three days, you will see a video of a Zoom call in which we will learn about the realities of poverty in Peru; and then will watch the house being built; and finally, we will meet the family for whom we build a new house as they move in.  Please remember that the spirit of Edmund Rice requires us to serve the poor, just as Edmund did at Mt Sion school in Waterford, Ireland.  Your generosity will help us truly “live Jesus in our hearts FOREVER!”
