The Standard: Matt Pikus Earns IHSA Academic All State

Senior Matt Pikus accomplished something that only a few student-athletes have ever done at Brother Rice; he has earned IHSA Academic All State. Pikus works very hard, whether it is on the field, throwing the shot put, or in the classroom. This achievement makes Matt the only student from a Catholic school in the Southland to receive this award.

The Standard: Mother McAuley and Brother Rice Come Together to Hold Veterans Day Prayer Service

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, Mother McAuley and Brother Rice hosted a memorial prayer service in honor of Veterans Day. It was hosted at Mother McAuley’s gym, and it was full of students, faculty, and veterans.

The service started with an opening prayer and continued with speeches by veterans who graduated from Brother Rice and Mother McAuley, students, and administrators. Many brave men and women who served in the military were honored.

The Standard: Villaseñor Family´s Impact Remembered by Street Naming

On Monday, Oct. 13, the Villaseñor family was honored with a street named after them at the intersection of 22nd and Throop Street. The community has been pleased to have V&V Supremo Foods in Pilsen for more than 60 years. V&V Supremo Foods creates genuine Mexican meat and cheese products; some include carne asada, queso fresco, and a lot more. The community has loved having them in the area for so long and are happy to see that the family is being honored with a street name.

The Standard: Jack Howley ‘26 Shoots One Under Par

On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Brother Rice Crusaders faced the state ranked Nazareth Roadrunners; even though the Crusaders lost, senior Jack Howley made the most of it. Jack Howley stepped up to the moment and scored one under par. The last time this happened was in 2023 and was not expected to happen again so fast, but Jack Howley had other plans.

Howley said, “After I did it, I was very happy, and I was excited to celebrate this with my family.”
