Looking back on my four years in high school, I can say that I am very grateful for being able to attend Brother Rice. Before coming to Rice, I had no idea about the school except that my brother Bryce played baseball here.

Brother Rice is more than just showing up for school at 7:50 a.m. and leaving at 2:45 p.m. The atmosphere, culture, and support you get at Brother Rice is special, and you will not be able to find that anywhere else.

On Monday, Apr. 13, the Crusaders faced Aurora Central Catholic in a non-conference battle. The Crusaders won 15-0 in a mercy-rule finish after four innings. This was a much needed win after finishing 1-3 in Kentucky.

Senior pitcher Austin Mrskos got the start for the Crusaders allowing 0 runs over 4 innings, giving up only three hits. “This was my first start this year and I was willing to give everything I had,” said Mrskos.

The Standard: Crusader Baseball Competes at Bishop Gorman Invitational

On Monday, March 16, the Crusaders traveled to Las Vegas for the nationally ranked Bishop Gorman Invitational tournament. Sixteen nationally ranked teams from Utah, Florida, Illinois, California, Nevada, Canada, North Carolina, and Idaho participated.

The tournament included Bishop Gorman, Bishop Verot, Crimson Cliffs, Centennial, Faith Lutheran, Mountain Vista, Santa Margarita, Stoneman Douglas, American Fork, Berkeley Prep, Christopher Columbus, Gahr, Middleton, Vauxhall, T.C. Roberson, and Brother Rice according to Maxpreps.com.

On Friday, Feb. 13, the Crusaders took on the Caravan in a CCL, (Chicago Catholic League), conference matchup. The Crusaders hoped to further their five-game winning streak to six games.

Senior forward JJ Manos said, “Coming off the loss in the summer league, we were ready to come out and get a win.” The Crusaders fell to the Caravan in a 42-41 on a buzzer-beater layup.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the Crusaders took on the St. Laurence Vikings in a crosstown battle. After a loss to St. Laurence in the championship of the Hinsdale Classic, this was a much-needed win for the Crusaders.

“The practices leading up to games were intense, but we are ready to come out with the win,” said senior captain Charlie Wizgird.  The Crusaders came out strong and ended with a 64-47 victory over the Vikings.

As I was getting dressed for the game, I was very hyped. It was cold, windy, snowing and it was packed. Once I hit the fan bus, all those feelings went away and I was prepared to have the most fun in my life.

When we arrived at Northern Illinois University, the Crazies were locked and loaded and ready to cheer for our fellow Crusader men. The stands were filled with snow and slush. My shoes were wet and socks were drenched in water, but the jitters on being here kept me warm.

On Thursday Nov. 6, Brother Rice held its annual Junior Ring Ceremony for the Class of 2027. As a symbol of their growing leadership skills, the juniors were given class rings and medallions. The ring symbolizes the juniors’ role as the next leaders in the school and serves as a reminder of all the good times they had at Brother Rice High School.

The Standard: Crusaders Soccer Team Takes Down Caravan

On Thursday, Oct. 9, the Crusader soccer team traveled to Mount Carmel in a big Chicago Catholic League game against the Caravan. 

The Caravan struck first with goals putting them up 2-0 early, but the Crusaders came back later in the game to win 4-2.

Sophomore Julian Gaona said, “I knew we and Carmel were a good matchup, and we all had to play 100 percent if we wanted to win.”

On Friday, Sept. 5, the Crusaders traveled to play in the biggest rivalry game of the year against the Marist Redhawks in the annual Battle of Pulaski. After last year’s loss, this game was long awaited.

The Crusaders were firing on all cylinders. The seniors gave an explosive start with a touchdown from running back Jaylin Green and an interception from linebacker Charlie Barkmeier. The momentum kept up with a touchdown from junior wide receiver Lucas Strang.
