The Standard: My Final Article (Assuming I Graduate Before My Foosball Debt Resurfaces)

For the Class of ‘21, the last year of high school has been as far from normal as you can imagine. Luckily for us, though, we have years of memories to look back on.

Looking back at these previous four years, time seems as if it has flown by so fast. It feels like just yesterday I was a freshman buying cookies for my friends after losing in foosball almost daily.  (Frank and Justin, I probably still owe you). The actual reason that there no longer is a foosball table is so that I wouldn’t go broke. I also […]

The Standard: NCAA Athlete Spotlight: Moses Moody – Arkansas

2021-03-28T12:12:16-05:00

The Arkansas Razorbacks of the SEC have put together a really nice season and are looking to do damage in the tournament. Head coach Eric Musselman has many options to go to on his team but the one that sticks out the most is freshman guard, Moses Moody.

At 6’6, Moody has length on the defensive end along with being a matchup nightmare on the offensive end of the floor. As a freshman, Moses scores 17.2 points a game to help pace the Razorbacks who like to score. Arkansas plays a fast paced tempo game meaning that there are […]

The Standard: Crusader Bowling Claims Chicago Catholic League

2021-03-25T08:04:34-05:00

Last weekend the Crusader bowling team claimed the Chicago Catholic League title over the Shamrocks from St. Patrick led by huge performances by seniors Tony Lundy, Josh Bell, and Brennan O’Malley.

In a year where athletes across the state were uncertain if they would be given a season, the Crusaders made the most of it.

Senior Collin Rice said, “I felt excited when I found out that there would be a season, although I was kind of disheartened that the season was going to be short.”

Throughout the season, the Crusaders knew that they would turn it on. A few weeks […]

The Standard: Illinois High School Sports Are Back

2021-02-25T23:56:57-06:00

Not long ago it seemed as if high school student-athletes were going to miss out on their seasons due to the pandemic. Golf, cross-country and other low-risk sports were allowed to play while high-risk sports such as football and basketball seemed to be pushed back further and further.

Many looked at it as if the IHSA kept kicking the can down the road or the governor was moving the goalposts on the kids.

Back in the fall, the IHSA decided that they were going to go against the governor and start the basketball season on time. Then the plan didn’t […]

NFL Championship Week Recap

With only four teams remaining in the playoffs, a lot was at stake. Can Tom Brady go to the Super Bowl in the NFC? Will the Chiefs be able to repeat?

This weekend, we were treated to a Tom Brady turnover barrage, Green Bay coaching blunder, and a soon to be Super Bowl first.

Things got going early Sunday afternoon with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visiting Lambeau Field and the Packers. The first half played out with both teams scoring on touchdown passes from their legendary quarterbacks.

Near the end of the first half, Tampa Bay held a 14-10 lead. Green […]

The Standard: What Do The Students Think of The Hybrid Schedule?

2020-10-29T23:13:13-05:00

By Cullen Cosme ‘21

The year 2020 has been like no other. Some schools are going back to school full-time while others are full e-learning. At Brother Rice we are doing a bit of both with our hybrid schedule. The students have been broken up into two groups with one group learning in school while the other learns via Zoom or Google Meet.

For as nice as it is to be back in school, it still stinks that not everybody can be there at once.

Senior Andy Sloyan said, “I like the hybrid schedule because it is great to be back in school with […]

The Standard: Managing a Fantasy Football Team During the Coronavirus

2020-10-02T21:35:33-05:00

By Cullen Cosme ‘21

This football season marks another year of the 10 team fantasy football league I am in with some friends. Over the previous few seasons my teams have posted some not-so-good records which include a last-place finish leading to a punishment haircut. Aidan O’Connor, the defending champ always jokes, “I enjoy the bye week as I call it, when I play Cullen. It is always nice knowing that there is an excellent chance that you have an automatic victory.”

When the NFL deemed it was safe to play, they still faced many challenges keeping the players and other personnel safe.

One […]
