After climbing through the ranks of scouting, I only have a few more steps until I get the rank of Eagle Scout. One of these steps to becoming an Eagle Scout is to be in charge of a service project. The Standard: Coach Martin Burke’s Success Story

Coach Martin Burke has been around Brother Rice wrestling since 2005. He was a wrestler at Brother Rice during that time. Burke spontaneously joined the wrestling team one day, and it was one of the best decisions of his life.

Burke said, “Joe Gonzalez and Kevin Kelly were stopping kids in the hallway to try and recruit new wrestlers. It basically went like this: ‘Hey are you coming to wrestle? Well, get in here; you’re on the team now.’”

On Sunday, Jan. 26, Catholic Schools Week kicked off at Brother Rice. Brother Rice students and teachers attended St. Christina Church for the “Men of Edmund Celebration of Faith.” The event celebrated our faith together as Crusaders. Brother Rice plans to travel to different parishes and attend Mass as a faith community. Brother Rice is thankful for all the Catholic grammar schools that students are from.

Senior Robby Raphael-McElroy said, “I really enjoyed the Mass. I hope we do more things like it in the future.”

The Crusader “matmen” are excited for the upcoming season. The crusaders are coming off their best season in team history, with a fourth place finish at team state. Additionally, the team had nine state qualifiers, tying the team record. With a stacked team this season, the Crusaders are looking to have another monster season.

The Standard: Brother Rice Hosts Successful Hygiene Drive

On Monday, Oct. 14, Brother Rice held a hygiene product drive. This drive supported the Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry. Students brought hygiene products into the main gym and had them on display during the Academic and Service Honors Pep Rally.

Senior Jay Jilek, an avid member of the Advocacy Club, said, “It was a great turnout. We were able to collect multiple tables full of hygiene items of all types that will really help the community. I was glad to be a part of it.”

The Standard: The Story Behind Brother Rice Soccer vs Washington

On Monday, Sept. 16, the Brother Rice soccer seam faced off against a tough opponent, Chicago Washington. The Crusaders defeated Washington 2-0, in a convincing win.

The Crusaders came out with the win, improving their record to 6-2-2 on the season. However, the team’s victory wasn’t the biggest story of the night.

Brother Rice Head Soccer Coach Al Perez had coached at Washington for many years. This season, Coach Prunckle stepped down and gave the reins of the program to new teacher and coach, Al Perez.
