The Standard: The Grind Doesn’t Stop

Unfortunately, I won’t really miss Brother Rice until I’m already gone. I did plenty of new things during senior year, such as benching two plates for the first time, driving my own car, running my first Turkey Trot, enjoying every class on my schedule, joining new clubs, becoming a color leader in Edmund Rice Camp, and going on Kairos.

Finally, I had the chance to be taught by some of the “GOATs” at Brother Rice, such as Brother Hayes, Mr. Dolan, and Mr. Augustyn. Each teacher had a different way of teaching, but all three helped me learn the […]

The Standard: Crusaders Off to Bigger and Better Things

What are the Crusaders’ next steps after high school?

Brother Rice seniors are off to college, the trades, or joining the workforce. Seniors wore their college shirts as a way to celebrate decision day, which is a common deadline for accepting your admission offer from a college.

Senior Troy Beaver said, “It is the start of a new chapter in life. Students are starting to get a true feeling for the first time what it is they truly love to do and how they want to live their lives.”

Seniors have already surpassed many other graduation class scholarship totals with an […]

The Standard: A Successful Career Day

Another successful Career Day took place last Friday. Thank you to all the Brother Rice Alumni that made Career Day such a success.

Senior Troy Bever said, “Career Day was overall a pretty good experience. It was interesting hearing about all these different jobs, some of which I have never even heard of, and the former students telling stories from their various walks of life.”

Career Day is a way to learn about all the possible job paths Brother Rice students can take. Alumni that come to Career Day give out business cards and industry knowledge so that students have […]

The Standard: Pole Vault School Record at MVP Vibe Fest

2023-03-10T12:42:07-06:00

By Danny Hughes ´23

Congratulations are in order for senior Joey Heilmann after he broke the pole vault school record. Joey, with a pole vault height of 13 foot 11 and ¼ inches, broke the previous school record set eight years earlier back in 2015 by Chris Grosskopf by almost a foot.

Joey originally joined the track team to do the long jump, but after an injury two weeks before the end of his sophomore season, he was put into the pole vault at sectionals. After only two weeks of practice, Joey got over 10 feet 6 inches. This was two and a […]

The Standard: An Enlightening Experience

Kairos is, hands down the best experience I have had throughout my four years at Brother Rice. The retreat helped me reconnect with God.

Some tips that you will need if you go on Kairos are to bring an extra pair of shoes, PLEASE bring deodorant, and keep an open mind throughout the retreat. The reason why Kairos is so secretive is that there is no way to fully explain the experience without actually experiencing Kairos.

One of the main reasons that students go on Kairos is because Mr. Augustyn’s peer ministry class is required to go to pass the […]

The Standard: Under the Sea at Mother McAuley

“Spectacular” is the word to describe Mother McAuley’s “The Little Mermaid.” So many factors made this musical the MUST SEE SHOW: the talented actors, incredible set design, and intricate fly system, to name a few.

“The Little Mermaid” show on the 19th of November featured Joseph Heilmann and Kaylee McClain.  They were a great duo and made the show truly amazing. The actors grab your attention right from the start with the “Fathoms Below” number as Heilmann comes swinging in on a rope.

Bella Hughes, a senior at Mother McAuley, said, “This show was an incredible blend of talented cast, […]

The Standard: College Corner – University of Illinois

A short two-hour drive to Champaign, Illinois led me to a school with a top engineering program in the country. On the agenda was a 45-minute informational presentation and a 90-minute walking tour around the campus.

Every building on the tour was unique, especially the Talbot Lab, which contained The Southwark-Emery Universal Testing Machine, which is a two-story crushing machine that uses up to three million pounds of tension or compression power on any material tested.

Another fantastic building was the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building. The building contained a nanofabrication lab, an extremely clean lab where students research semiconductors […]

The Standard: How Does a 9 Period Schedule Affect You?

2022-10-06T20:01:16-05:00

By Danny Hughes ‘23

Why should someone take electives?

Electives are extremely important in school because electives teach students about areas of study not taught in a regular class. Having a wider variety of electives allows students to expand their interests.

The new 9-period schedule will give students more opportunities to study business, nursing, theater, and other electives. Now that Brother Rice and Mother McAuley’s schedules are almost identical, students have more options with nursing and theater classes on McAuley’s campus.

With more classes available to students, class sizes will decrease and allow students to form more personal relationships with their teachers. Fewer students per […]
