From the very first day of the school year, I knew this was going to be a fun year. I got lucky with my schedule and got classes that I was excited about.

The thing that made each day so great were the people. At Brother Rice, it seemed like everyone understood each other.

We could be super open with our classmates and our teachers. We’ve had some of the most interesting conversations and in class discussions.

It was great to finally get a year that was normal. Other than having to wear masks for the first half of the school […]

IMG is a school that gets recruits from all over the country. Their team is full of top ranked guys committed to playing at the top colleges in the country and has two projected first-round draft picks in this upcoming draft. Their roster has more top ranked players than any other team in the country.

When we first heard we were playing IMG this season, it was a game that excited us. We had the chance to play the number 2 ranked team in the country. Getting a challenge like this is something we love.

Knowing how good of a […]

The Standard: Crusaders Unmasked

Anyone who enters Brother Rice’s building now has a choice of whether or not to wear a mask. As a student who’s three of my four years in high school were affected by the coronavirus, I can say I could not be happier.

I think masks should have been gone as soon as the vaccine became widely available. The vaccine is very effective in lowering the risk in getting and spreading the virus. The vaccine is more effective in protecting against the virus than masks ever were.

After wearing a mask for about a year and a half in school, […]

Many grammar schoolers dream of playing basketball for Brother Rice. It is very difficult to make the team with so much competition and great players.

Making the team is an accomplishment in and of itself. Many players try and many fail to make the team. Many people do not realize how tough it is to make the freshman team.

The Brother Rice basketball program has four different levels of teams with the highest being varsity and lowest being the freshman B team. The players on the freshman B team do not get enough credit for their skills.

The B team is […]

On Thursday, Nov. 11, the annual Veterans Day prayer service was held at Brother Rice. The prayer service is a time to acknowledge the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to serve their country.

The prayer service opened with the “Star Spangled Banner” performed by the band and sung by band director Mr. Zach Zielinski. The National Anthem represents the tradition, history, and beliefs of the United States and its people.  “Taps” was also played during the prayer service.

Senior Jimmy Hogan said, “When I heard “Taps,” I felt a sense of pride in my […]

The Standard: Your 2021 Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox 2021 season is now over. The Sox put together a squad that was good enough to compete for a World Series title. Even though the Sox fell short of their ultimate goal, they still had an amazing and very fun season.

From the very beginning of the season, the White Sox roster was plagued by injuries. These injuries are what led to the emergence of Yermín Mercedes. Mercedes’ MVP level of hitting in the first month of the season is what helped the White Sox start out hot and he became a fan favorite.

Senior Sean […]
