I am very relieved to know that I have finally made it to my last days of my senior year. Many people don’t realize how good life is until you are way past it, but I realized that this year was one of the greatest highs I’ve ever experienced. From the state championship game to late night study sessions I knew that everything I do this year should be cherished.

Let’s start off from the first day of the 2025-2026 school year. On Aug. 18, you could just tell that everyone in the […]

On Friday, Apr. 24, Rice Relays broke away from its normal tradition this year and moved the annual track and field showcase from Brother Rice to Evergreen Park High School.

While the venue of this event changed, the meet featured a great field of competitors from many different Chicago area teams. The event was held Friday and brought together programs such as St. Rita, St. Laurence, DePaul College Prep, Fenwick, Leo, Mt. Carmel, and Evergreen Park.

There were many performances that took place on this newly renovated track. St. Laurence […]

The Standard: The Drive

This weekend, my parents and I made the nine-hour drive to South Dakota State University. I took the first shift behind the wheel, which was about seven hours. For a long time, it was just open road and good music…The calm before the literal storm.

Everything changed when we crossed into Wisconsin. We pulled off for a regular gas refill, but as we were getting ready to get back onto the highway, the air changed. Then the sound every Midwesterner hates came around; the wild, rhythmic wail of a tornado siren.

We had a split second decision to make. We […]

The Standard: Taste of Soul

2026-03-05T13:44:16-06:00

On Thursday, Feb. 26, I went into the cafeteria in our school. It was transformed into a vibrant event known as Taste of Soul.

This event was dedicated to the traditions and history of the Black community. This brought students, families and faculty together through music, food, and stories.

There was good food there. My family and I ate ribs, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, barbecue chicken, and cabbage. This is also known as “Soul Food.”

Damien Melton said, “The atmosphere felt like home.”

While the food was one of the main things, the atmosphere brought by the music was an even […]

On Sunday, Feb. 1, Brother Rice held its annual National Honors Society induction ceremony, which recognizes the students who are not only scholars, but leaders of service and great character.

This event presents these students who are inducted into this prestigious organization.

Daniel Speski said, “It was great to see many new members get inducted into the NHS along with him.”

Seventy-three students were inducted and received certificates of membership. Senior members will receive their NHS graduation cords at the Baccalaureate Mass later this semester and get to wear them at graduation.

The speakers included Mr. Mark Donahue, Principal Robert Alberts, President […]

The Standard: Learning Gravity

As I sat in the snow, head and tailbone hurting badly, I thought to myself, “is this even worth it?”

One Saturday morning my brother, a couple of our friends, and I decided to go snowboarding.

Crazy to attempt, but this was my first time ever going snowboarding, and I didn’t know what to expect.

The day began at a reasonable place and time.  Around 12:00 p.m., we arrived at the ski resort and went straight to the ski rental area.

Getting this big board and wearing these crazy moon boots, I felt out of my comfort zone.  However, I knew that […]

The Standard: State Stories – 44 years

2025-12-12T10:20:32-06:00

44 years…

It took us 44 years to get to the place we are at today.

One summer morning, I was called up by Coach Cano, and he asked me what are the expectations of this 2025 football season. I responded with, “We have to win the state.”

Everyone around me looked at me and just knew what had to be done.

That brings me back to the day of the state championship, Dec. 3, 2025…

This day will remain a memory in my life forever.

Once I woke up, I immediately remembered that today is not only state but also signing day. […]

The Standard: Brother Rice Alumni Face Off

2025-10-30T20:51:58-05:00

By Emeir White ’26

This is the second year of a matchup between Brother Rice alumni. This showcase included bonds that extended beyond high school and onto the college level.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, the University of St. Thomas defeated Valparaiso University 55-17 in a game that featured four former Crusaders: Marcus Brown ‘24, Donovan Brown ‘25 and Marty O’Keefe ‘24 of Valparaiso, against Owen Lyons ’23 of St. Thomas. This formed a game that symbolized more than just another matchup.

While the scoreboard represented a collegiate competition, the deeper view of this game was about brotherhood and pride from the shared roots of […]

The Standard: The Start of Cross Country with Andrew Straley

The cross country team is off to a fast and steady start!

Senior captain Andrew Straley, a fierce and powerful runner, believes that the team will do great this year.

Straley said, “It is not just the races; training has gone very well this season, and as it progresses, I am feeling faster and faster. The team has also found some success this season, which is really nice.”

This year, the team has lost three of its seniors from the previous year, as well as being moved up to the top division in the state. While their goals have changed, their […]
