Although my name would tell you otherwise, I didn’t always see myself at Brother Rice.

For as long as I could remember, proximity and family history had made my parents assume it was my whole choice. However, I felt like I was being forced in a way and shadowed other schools like Marist, Mount Carmel, Rita and De La Salle.

A lot of schools impressed me. Some schools even made me consider them until testing day.

But nothing came close to Brother Rice.

From the first day you walk in the door, people are ready to talk and be friends with you. […]

In any sport across the world, rivalry games hold a certain air of intensity that other opponents simply can’t match.

This was the case Tuesday night, as the Brother Rice rugby team faced off against Marist for their senior night. Not only were the teams competing for the best record in the conference, but also to maintain their status as undefeated. “This was easily our most important game of the regular season,” said senior center John Bean.

As the stadium packed and anticipation grew, both teams knew one would have to fall.

In the opening minutes, Brother Rice struggled. Missed tackles, […]

The Standard: Rugby Dominates Rita 86-5

On Thursday, May 2, the Brother Rice rugby team had one goal in mind: defeating Saint Rita.

Although the team felt adequately prepared, there were outlying factors that could possibly set back the Crusaders. The stereotypical rainy, windy Chicago weather was in full effect, leaving the ball wet and the turf uncomfortable. In addition, the team had four starters out with injuries.

But the team showed absolutely no signs of weakness.

From the opening kickoff, the Crusaders showed their dominance on the offensive side of the ball. An early try from senior prop Danny Connors set the pace, carrying two defenders […]

The Standard: JV Rugby Defeats Fenwick

On Thursday, the Crusader JV rugby team defeated the Fenwick Friars 49-10.

Coming into the game, the Crusaders were confident that they would be victorious. Along with home field advantage, they had the experience of two shortened games already this season. Now, they had the chance to play under the lights as the only game of the night.

And they took advantage of the spotlight.

The Crusaders scored early and often, with an early try coming from junior wing Colin Condon. After a tackle knocked the ball free, Condon recovered it, stepped two defenders, and dove in for a try. “I […]

The Standard: Rice Falls Short in Regional Championship

As soon as it was announced that Brother Rice would be playing Simeon in the 2019 Regional Championship, comparisons were drawn to the legendary 2005 matchup between the two schools.

“That 2005 matchup is something everyone with Rice pride knows about,” said senior fan Mark Ward. Then, star guard Bobby Frasor was able to lead Brother Rice to a win over future NBA MVP Derrick Rose. Now, it was up to Marquise Kennedy and the Crusaders to defeat Simeon at home and advance to sectionals.

From the tip off, both teams came out firing on all cylinders.

“We came out strong, […]

A common saying in sports is that the only season that matters is the postseason. The Brother Rice Crusader basketball team capitalized on this with their home win against Thornton Fractional South.

The Crusaders knew they had a tough upcoming matchup against TF South. Leading up to the game, the team was focused and determined to advance to the regional championship.

“Everything is on the line now because it’s our last chance to play for a championship together,” said senior guard Jimmy Gavin. “It’s win or go home.”

No one was prepared for the thriller that followed.

The game started fast […]

As the snow melts and the weather warms, the Brother Rice rugby program hopes for a repeat of last year’s successful season.

Last year, the Brother Rice rugby team had a stellar performance, as they traditionally have. The team finished with not only a winning record, but a Catholic League championship.

Over the summer, the team took a tour of Ireland and won two matches against European opponents. “Being able to play in another country was an amazing experience”, said sophomore forward Kevin Barrett.

This year, the team looks to do even better. There are over […]
