Senior year has come and gone, thankfully.

Brother Rice has been an experience that will prepare me for the next chapter of my life. It has been the place where I have not only gotten a great education, but also valuable life lessons.

I came into Brother Rice as a shy kid who did not know a single student in any classes. Now, four years later, I am much more confident and proud of who I am.

My senior year started off with the best part of the year, golf season. I have been fortunate enough to be able to be […]

The Standard: A Visit to the Friendly Confines

Everybody has their happy place; mine is Wrigley Field.

On April 7, I took a trip to Wrigley Field to watch the Chicago Cubs take on the Texas Rangers. On the mound for the Cubs was Marcus Stroman and on the mound for the Rangers was Nathan Eovaldi. The first pitch was scheduled for 1:20 p.m. on a beautiful, sunny day.

All you need to do is stand outside Wrigley Field, and you will start feeling the good vibes. The gorgeous stadium, the adoring fans, and the lovely weather all make for a wonderful day at the ballpark.

It is worth […]

The Standard: “The Death Quarter”

January, February, and March, better known as “The Death Quarter,” is here. During this time period, freshmen start to slack off and not give the full effort they usually do, which could easily result in the “death” of their grades.  As much as teachers warn their students, “The Death Quarter” always wins.

Starting high school is an experience unlike any other; new school, new classmates, and a new schedule. The first three months of the school year are typically the learning period for freshmen. Students are eager to turn in assignments on time and get off to a good […]

Super Bowl LVII was the largely anticipated matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The two teams were both the number one seed in their conference, and the game lived up to the expectations.

The game started off with the Eagles marching down the field and scoring on their first drive.

“The Eagles sent a strong message to start the game and got me excited to watch all four quarters,” said senior Adrian Peñuelas.

The Chiefs answered right back by also scoring on their first drive. Tight end Travis Kelce had a big catch to set up the […]

The Standard: Christmas Disaster

I hope you all got what you wished for this Christmas because I sure did not.

Now do not get me wrong; I love Christmas as much as everyone else does. It’s a great time to see your whole family and catch up with people you have not seen in a while.

But we know why we all love it – the presents.

I made a great big list filled with present ideas this holiday season.

To my surprise, I got none of them.

I woke up on Christmas morning full of excitement to open presents and finally get what I have been […]

The Standard: Brother Rice Golf

When you think of sports at Brother Rice, what comes to your mind first?

Be honest – it wasn’t golf.

Although golf isn’t the marquee sport at Brother Rice, the team continues to make a name for themselves throughout the years. Just this past season, the team traveled to Olympia Fields, La Grange Country Club, Oak Park Country Club, and many more. Many players have been playing outstanding golf and are being recognized for their accomplishments.

Coach Vaughan and Coach Patton are the coaching duo and are two great examples for the players. Coach Vaughan said, “The most important part of […]

Brent Sopel said, “It’s okay not to be okay.”

That is the message that former Stanley Cup champion Brent Sopel explained while speaking to students at Brother Rice. Sopel is widely recognized as a professional hockey player who had a fantastic career in the NHL, but Sopel hopes to create a new legacy through the Brent Sopel Foundation.

Sopel suffers from dyslexia and created the Brent Sopel Foundation to aid students who also suffer from dyslexia. Dyslexia is a reading disorder that limits a person’s ability to read at a normal pace and level. The Brent Sopel Foundation gives families […]

Brother Rice has a new basketball coach for this upcoming season!

Coach Conte Stamas has been named as the new head coach for the varsity basketball team and is excited to get to work. Coach Stamas’ responses will excite Brother Rice fans.

Why was Coach Stamas drawn to apply for the position at Brother Rice? He said, “Initially I knew about the basketball tradition at Brother Rice, but I didn’t know much else about the school, neighborhood, and the community. So as I became interested in the position, I started to look at the academic component. Thirty-six Illinois state scholars […]
