Before my senior year, people told me to enjoy my last year of high school because it will go by fast. I never believed this saying because my last three years have felt like a lifetime. However, the one year I wanted to feel like a lifetime flashed before my eyes.

I remember picking up my schedule and taking my ID pictures this summer, not realizing it would be the last time I would do this. On the first day of any school year, I loved talking to people that I never saw in the summer. It just dawned […]

On Saturday, April 29, the JV Brother Rice water polo team traveled to Loyola to compete in the  Metro Catholic Aquatic Conference JV championship game against the Fenwick Friars. Coming into the game the Friars were the one seed and the Crusaders were the two seed, setting up a great matchup.

Sophomore Vic Basile said, “I knew we were going to beat Fenwick. The second I found out we were playing them; I wasn’t worried at all.”

The game was a defensive battle the whole way through. Both teams were playing conservatively, making smart choices and minimal mistakes.

Coach Scott Hidenhaugh […]

On Dec. 20, Marquette University finally released their admission decisions. I got in! I have only heard great things about Marquette which made me want to see what all the hype was about.

On a day off from school, my parents and I traveled up north to Milwaukee to visit Marquette.

When we arrived, we were welcomed by an admission counselor, received a brochure and listened to an informative presentation on Marquette. After the presentation, the counselor assigned us to a student to help guide us around campus.

The first place we visited was the Diederich College of Communication. The main […]

On Saturday Jan. 28, the Crusader mat men traveled to Fenwick to compete in the JV Chicago Catholic League Championship.

Before the meet, sophomore Danny Tait said, “Our mindset for the meet was to win. We were all locked in and ready to wrestle.” The mat men did just that by dominating every opponent in the way. They totaled 273 team points and finished in first place. They outscored the second place Fenwick by over 50 points.

All thirteen Crusaders placed at least top five in their respective weight classes. There were six first place finishes by Oliver Davis (120), […]

The Standard: My Entrance Exam Journey

On Dec. 3, the Class of 2027 took the first step into becoming Crusaders by taking the entrance exam. All Chicago Archdiocese high schools host entrance exams, and only being able to choose one school to test at can be stressful. I remember the months leading up to the entrance exam like it was yesterday.

Before shadowing Brother Rice, I shadowed at all of the other schools, familiarizing myself with the climate of each school. Within the first two periods of shadowing at Brother Rice, I wanted to be a Crusader. The climate at Brother Rice was unmatched compared […]

Normal, Illinois is the home of Illinois State University; however, Illinois State is no normal school. I recently was accepted into Illinois State and wanted to check it out. I know numerous people who have gone there, and I have only heard good things.

On a day off from school, my parents and I took a trip down to Normal. When we arrived, we were greeted by admissions counselors, received a folder with information on Illinois State, and listened to a brief presentation. Then, we were assigned a tour guide to navigate us around the school.

The first place we […]

The greatest achievement as a Brother Rice athlete is to be inducted into the Circle of Champions. Members of the Circle of Champions have all made a name for themselves as a Crusader. George Escobarete ‘91 joins this honorable group of very few.

George Escobarete played baseball at Brother Rice and created an impressive resume for himself as a pitcher. In the 1991 season, George was voted as team MVP by his teammates. He struck out batters left and right with 75 strikeouts. George was not only a starter, but also a closer for the Crusaders. He led the […]
