The Standard: My Final Hurrah

When I started at Brother Rice, I didn’t know what to expect. Everything felt new and I was still trying to figure out where I fit in. It felt like I had a lot of time ahead of me, not knowing how fast four years would actually go.

By the time senior year came around, something felt different. I started to become more comfortable and involved in school. Being President of Diversity Club was something I cared about because it meant I was able to lead a group that represented 16% Hispanic/Latino and […]

The Standard: Pop Culture Club Brings Students Together

Pop Culture Club gives students a place to relax and talk about things they actually enjoy. Instead of focusing on schoolwork, the club focused on music, trends, and different parts of pop culture.

The club meets every Tuesday and usually focuses on different topics each week. A lot of the time students talk about different song eras and how music has changed over time. It gives people a chance to share what they like and hear what others are into.

Senior Chaz Knight said, “It’s cool how we talk about […]

The Standard: Beyond the Classroom Lessons from Career Day

2026-04-02T13:28:11-05:00

The 2026 Career Day, held on Friday, March 27, was different from a normal school day. Instead of sitting in class all day, students moved around and listened to alumni talk about their jobs. It was more interesting than I expected and not just another regular day.

One speaker was FBI Assistant Director Leo Schmitz ‘77. He talked about his job, but also said how important it is to look out for each other. That stuck with me because it wasn’t just about his job; it was something everyone can use. I thought that was one of the most […]

The Standard: Emeir White Challenges Students to be the Standard

2026-02-05T19:55:16-06:00

Emeir White, a football state champion and school leader, delivered one of the Founder’s Day speeches that encouraged students to reflect on courage, identity, and BRotherhood. He used his experiences and connected it to the life of Edmund Rice. Despite coming from different centuries and backgrounds, we all have a shared belief of using education to create opportunities.

Reflectin g on his first day as a freshman Emeir admitted he wondered whether the school was built for someone from his neighborhood. Learning about Edmund Rice’s life throughout the years helped him realize he doesn’t need to change who he is […]

The Model Train Club is one of the most hands-on clubs at Brother Rice. Members meet weekly to design layouts, build scenery, and learn the basics of engineering through a miniature rail system.

Senior club president Noah Vinter said, “The club is very fun, and you learn about engineering and even carpentry.¨

Members work together on everything from assembling background pieces, laying tracks, and keeping the trains that run through the layout in good running condition. Senior Chaz-Christian Knight said his favorite part is, “The work ethic helps you build and run through the railroads we’ve placed and the backgrounds […]

The Standard: State Stories – The Road to State

2025-12-09T10:27:37-06:00

The day the Crusader Nation has been waiting for finally came – the state game. I personally couldn’t wait until the day came, especially because I went to grammar school with wide receiver Ben Strimel and defensive lineman Landon Gilbert; not only that but because my cousin goes to Marist. In the car with senior Ian Sorenson driving, we talked the whole way about the game, life and much more.

We reached NIU and the energy changed. We were ready. We parked the car and once we got out I said to myself it’s freezing and these extra layers […]

The gym was packed and buzzing with energy as students gathered for this year’s pep rally. From music to races to messy competitions, the event had it all.

Senior Trey Webster competed in the mattress relay, where teams raced sliding across the gym floor. “The crowd was so loud it was a good environment and made everything more fun, said Webster.”

The freshman team won the race, but every participant earned points for their grade in the Student Olympics, with seniors finishing strong in other events.

Senior Holden Partacz performed in the concert, getting everyone locking arms and singing along.

“It was […]

The Brother Rice golf team competed in the Chicago Catholic League championship against schools across the city. The team secured 8th place finish, showcasing their skills against other programs in the league.

Individual standout performances included senior Matthew Hynes, who finished 8th individually demonstrated consistency and composure throughout the tournament. Before the match, Hynes said, “I just wanted to play my game and not overthink it.”

The championship was played under good weather conditions, with mild winds and clear skies that allowed for solid shot-making. Despite the conditions, the Crusaders stayed composed and supported one another throughout the rounds.

“I […]
