The Standard: I Can’t Wait to Go to a Concert when Quarantine Ends

One of my favorite memories from last summer was when I attended Lollapalooza with some of my friends. I had never been there before last year, so it was a completely new experience for me.

I had no idea what it would be like.

One thing I absolutely loved about the festival was simply getting to spend the day talking to and having fun with my friends right before we had to go back to school.

The other thing I loved was the music.

I got to see some very popular artists perform some great sets, and I had a blast. When […]

The Standard: I can’t wait to caddy once this lockdown ends.

2020-05-05T12:05:13-05:00

By Ken Foyle ‘20

Over the past four summers, I have been caddying to make money for myself. Caddying is a great way for young kids to get outside and make some very good money.

Caddying is also a great way to stay in shape during summer.

One might think I only caddy for the money, but there’s much more to it. I miss playing cards with the other caddies before a loop and having a nice hot dog after nine holes.

The experience of caddying is a staple of my summers, so I hope that this quarantine ends before the summer is over.

This is […]

The Standard: “Narcos”

2020-04-03T03:13:59-05:00

By Ken Foyle ‘20

Netflix’s “Narcos” is a show about the different drug cartels in Columbia and the DEA’s attempts to take them down. Currently the show is on its third season, and presumably has more on the way. Also, it is based on true events, but some scenes and events were dramatized for entertainment reasons.

Seasons 1 and 2 focus on the rise and fall of one of the world’s most infamous drug lords, Pablo Escobar. The show shifts focus from Pablo’s escapades to the exploits of DEA Agents Steve Murphy and Javier Pena.

“Narcos” perfectly encompasses Pablo’s rise to the top and […]

The Standard: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

2020-04-03T02:35:27-05:00

By Ken Foyle ‘20

FXX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is a show about a group of dysfunctional, egotistical friends who own a bar together in Philadelphia named Paddy’s Pub. The show consists mainly of episodes that follow the characters on one of their schemes or plans, each being more ridiculous than the last as the show progresses.

This comedy show’s episodes should be watched in chronological order, starting with Season 1 and finishing with the newly released Season 14 in order to get a good understanding of each character and his/her respective story arcs.

Be sure to pay attention to the show’s running […]

On Feb. 22, the World Heavyweight Championship in boxing took place in Las Vegas, Nev. The two competitors were Deontay Wilder, who went into the fight at 42-0-1, and Tyson Fury, whose record was 29-0-1.

Both Wilder and Fury are enormous in stature with Wilder standing at 6’7” and Fury walking around at 6’9”. The last time these two behemoths met, the fight ended in a draw.

The Standard: Ash Wednesday Prayer Service

2020-03-07T14:01:25-06:00

By Ken Foyle ‘20

Lent is a very important time for Catholics as we put aside worldly belongings and sacrifice day-to-day luxuries in order to thank Jesus for his coming.

Every year, a prayer service is held on Ash Wednesday, and this year was no different.

The speakers talked about their Lenten promises and stressed the importance of having a solid Lenten promise to keep instead of giving up a simple food or drink. Lenten promises are much more than just not doing something for 40 days; they are about living like Jesus and trying to better ourselves before His Resurrection.

A great example of […]

The Standard: White Island Disaster

2019-12-19T21:15:18-06:00

By Ken Foyle ‘20

Most tourists tend to travel to warm, sunny beaches or peaceful mountain resorts for vacation, but the thrill-seeking tourists prefer to do exciting things like zip lining and mountain climbing. In fact, some people are so daring, they visit active volcano sites for fun.

On Monday, Dec. 9, New Zealand’s White Island volcano erupted, killing at least 17 people and leaving at least 18 in severe condition. The eruption was unexpected and catastrophic.

“Everything was blanketed in ash,” said Russell Clark, a paramedic who flew to the scene to rescue some of the victims.

Authorities are still looking for and retrieving […]

The Standard: The Downfall of the Chicago Bears

2019-11-14T23:27:40-06:00

By Ken Foyle ‘20

The Chicago Bears have managed to disappoint their fans consistently for the past 10 years, and this year is no different.

Every season, fans expect the Bears to perform better than they did the previous season, but the Bears never fail to fall just shy of mediocrity.

Fans had high hopes with the arrival of Mitch Trubisky in 2017 alongside the powerhouse of a defense that they have managed to build up since 2015.

After a disappointing 16-15 playoff loss to the Eagles in 2018, fans were ready for the Bears to come back better than ever and maybe even contend […]

The Standard: Review of Doctor Sleep

Here’s Johnny!

“Doctor Sleep” is the long-awaited movie sequel to Steven King’s novel “The Shining,” following what happened at the Overlook Hotel 30 years later.

“The Shining” was previously adapted for the big screen by Stanley Kubrik in 1980, which became one of the most iconic horror movies of all time.

Just a child in “The Shining,” main character and now adult Danny Torrence, played by Ewan McGregor, struggles with his past in “Doctor Sleep.”

The movie grapples with the theme of inner demons and a troubled past, and it shows alcoholism as the driving force of the characters’ actions. The plot […]
