And just like that, my senior year is coming to an end. It felt like just yesterday that I was starting summer camp for football.

While this year marked my last year at BR as a student, it also marked my last year of playing football. The season was special as it felt like it was never going to end. I have made memories and friendships that I will never forget. I will never forget after practice receiver drills and meetings with Coach Dino. People may not remember this team in the coming years, but it will […]

The Standard: Morbius Film Review

Do you know that feeling when you want to spit out some homemade cooking but you don’t want to insult your mom or dad? That is how I felt while watching “Morbius.” I already bought the ticket, so I might as well suffer through it.

“Morbius” is a new Marvel movie starring Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius. In the film, Dr. Morbius uses blood from a vampire bat to save his life. Morbius ends up becoming a vampire himself, only able to survive on the blood of humans.

Before you start in the comments, no, it is not the […]

Tennis is soon coming to a high school near you! In this case it’s Brother Rice, but you know I wanted to try something promotional.

The Crusader tennis team has been on the rise over the last few years. Ever since the departure of longtime coach and teacher, Mr. Grogan, the Crusaders have been under a new regime. Led by coaches Mr. Rob Vogt and Mr. Brendan Coughlan, Crusader tennis looks better than ever.

I caught up with Coach Vogt about this upcoming season: “I am very excited about this year’s team. Overall, we’re going to be pretty young. To […]

The Standard: Crusader Basketball falls to DePaul Prep

2022-02-17T22:01:03-06:00

By Liam Lyons ‘22

Last night Brother Rice basketball lost to a very tough DePaul Prep team. The Crusaders fell to 21-5 (10-2 in conf.) with a 49-39 loss. This loss pushes the Crusaders back even further in the Catholic League race. Leo beating St. Rita which helps keep the Lions in first place last night didn’t help.

Coming off two losses prior, Brother Rice looked to bounce back last night. With forward Jayden Watson out due to injury, the Crusaders were faced with an uphill battle. DePaul Prep had a key size advantage, but some key minutes from Jack Lausch and Ryan […]

The Standard: Coach Klutch and His Experience at State

2021-11-19T15:30:30-06:00

This past week, I interviewed Coach Mark Klutcharch, teacher, sophomore football coach, and freshman basketball coach, about what it was like to play in a state championship game. Coach Klutch was a part of the 1981 state championship football team who defeated Reavis in the state championship. Here is what he had to say about his experience and what it was like.

State Championship

When asked to write about my experience playing in the 1981 state championship game, I had a hard time getting started. Then I realized why – it’s not just about […]

The Standard: Freshmen Football vs Joliet West

2021-11-08T20:08:40-06:00

By Liam Lyons ‘22

Last Thursday, the freshman football team fell to 3-5 after a 16-13 loss to the Tigers of Joliet West. It was a grudge match throughout, but the Crusaders fell short. Thursday marked the first ever matchup between the two schools.

Going into Thursday night’s game, Brother Rice knew without the help of quarterback Connor Stack, linebacker Ryan Lynch, defensive lineman Ryan Dooey, wide receiver Kris Love, and center Tadgh Callaghan, they would be at a disadvantage. With no true backup, Daniel Terri and Cooper McAlilly split reps at the quarterback spot.

Brother Rice started the game with the ball but […]
