My senior year is coming to an end, and I feel that it was my best year at Rice. I am having some of the best memories at the moment. I tried new things like cross country and have also been captain of the Scholastic Bowl team. However, I will be sad to leave Brother Rice as I have spent the last four years going to school here.

The Standard: The Crusader Duel

On Friday, April 4, the Crusaders competed at home in their intersquad meet, the Crusader Duel. The “Black Team” led by senior captains Donovan Brown and Aldo Crema beat the “White Team” led by Gavin O’Connor. This was also technically the first outdoor meet of the season.

The meet started off with the shot put. Al Crema won the shotput while Matt Pikus and Emeir White took 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Standard: Evanston Boys Phillips-Richards Relays

On Saturday, March 15, 2025, the Brother Rice track and field team competed at Evanston High School in the Phillips-Richards relays. Varsity took 6th and fresh-soph took 5th overall.

In the fresh-soph 55-meter dash freshman Decatur Washington took 5th with a time of 7.26 while sophomore Jameson Davis took 1st with a time of 6.88. Meanwhile in the varsity 55m dash, junior Dan Speski placed 2nd with a time of 6.83.

Speski said, “I ran well and I’m happy to have taken 2nd place.”

The Standard: Proviso Valentine Relays

On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Brother Rice track team competed at the Proviso West Valentine Relays. The team participated in the 4×200-meter, 4×400-meter, and 4×800-meter relays.

In the 4×200-meter, the A team for Brother Rice took third place overall with an excellent time of 1:34.35. The A team consisted of Danny White, Emeir White, Danny Speski, and Donovan Moody. Meanwhile, the B team ran a respectable 1:37.73, which saw them place 12th overall. The B team consisted of Jameson Davis, Jimmie Maxson III, Donovan Brown, and Keanu Juhasz.

On Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 18, some members of the Brother Rice Track and Field team participated in their first meet at the CYUP Misfits invite. Six athletes competed at the meet which was held at Gately Stadium.

On Friday, Gavin O’Connor ran the mile and took 9th place overall with a time of 4 minutes, 32.69 seconds, out of 103 entries. Andrew Straley also ran well on Saturday in the mile heats on that day.

Gavin O’Connor said, “Even though I didn’t run the best race it was still a good way to start the season.”

The Standard: Cross Country’s Return to the State Meet

On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Brother Rice cross country team competed in the 2A State Finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria. After narrowly missing out on qualifying last year, the team managed to qualify for state by one point.

The team had previously competed at Detweiller earlier this year, twice at the Peoria Invitational, and once at the Peoria First to the Finish invite. The course has been touted as being one of the best in Illinois.

The Standard: Brother Rice Soccer Wins on Senior Day

The Brother Rice soccer team dominated against the St Rita Mustangs on Senior Day, winning the match 8-0.

Brother Rice improved to 12-3-2, while St. Rita fell to 2-13 on the year. The Crusaders also improved to 3-1-1 in conference.

There are 11 seniors on the Brother Rice soccer team that all took the field for what may be one of the last times playing at Gary Little Stadium.

The ceremony was very nice, as all the seniors’ families received photos and flowers. All of the seniors’ names were listed along with their achievements and where they are going to college.

The Standard: The Pulaski Cup

Can you imagine if the biggest match of the year in Brother Rice soccer went to penalties? That’s what happened on Saturday, September 9, in the Pulaski Cup against Marist.

The Brother Rice soccer team played Marist in the annual Pulaski Cup. The Crusaders won the match in penalties after a very intense match. Brother Rice improved to 4-1-1 overall on the season.

The match was very competitive from the start. Rice had many shots on goal, but Marist goalkeeper Joe Lieber was incredible and kept them in the match.
