The Standard: Shadow Day

Brother Rice hosted its last official big shadow day on Monday, Feb. 20, and it was a great day for shadows and students.

Grade school students were dropped off at the main gym in the morning and picked up by their host, and the day started from there.

Over 100 kids from 36 different schools attended Brother Rice to experience what the brotherhood is all about.

When asked about the shadow day, Patrick Malloy from Christ the King, said, “The experience has been fun. I’ve learned a lot about Brother Rice and what goes on during the day.”

The Standard: Basketball Weekend Recap

The Brother Rice varsity basketball team played two highly competitive games this past weekend. The games were nail biters. Brother Rice fell to Loyola 50-47 on Friday night, but they bounced back Saturday against Rolling Meadows winning 64-59.

On a lively Friday night, Brother Rice matched up with Loyola Academy on 99th and Pulaski. Both teams were 6-1 in conference play heading into the game so this game was crucial for the Catholic League rankings.

Senior Ryan Kenney said, “It was a key game for us because we are trying to give ourselves a chance at winning the league.”

The Brother Rice basketball season started up last week with the Thanksgiving Tournament at Riverside Brookfield. All eyes were on the highly ranked team as they took on Morton for the first game of the tournament.

Brother Rice started off slow with sloppy play but ended up taking control of the game in the 2nd quarter and winning the game 79-48.

Senior Ryan Gierhahn said, “It was fun to finally play a game after all the time we put in during the off-season. We played well and set the tone for the rest of the tournament.”

The Standard: Intramural Tennis

Intramural tennis has started up at Brother Rice, and the sport is expanding throughout the school.

Tennis was not always a sport people played at Brother Rice, but the program is taking steps in the right direction. Coach Vogt, a teacher at Brother Rice, is the head coach for the tennis team and has really brought the sport to a new level.

Coach Vogt said, “When I took over, we had five players in the entire program. Last season, we had 14 players on the roster, and this year we’ve had over 20 attend intramurals.”

The Standard: The College Process

The Brother Rice/Mother McAuley College Fair was a success. It attracted over 150 schools across the country and hundreds of students showed up.

The fair took place in both Brother Rice and Mother McAuley’s gym. Students from all grade levels piled in the schools to start or complete their college search.
