Walking through the doors of Brother Rice High School this past fall, I felt a mix of excitement and pressure. I was coming off the best summer of my life and was ready to have more fun with Rice guys at football games and homecoming. The pressure sank in when I realized I also had major decisions to make, like college applications.

Compared to junior year, classes felt like a breeze. This year, I was really able to enjoy the teachers and students around me since the course load was lighter.

On April 11, many Crusaders and Mighty Macs traveled from 99th Street to the Palmer House for Mother McAuley’s prom.

The long day began at 5 p.m. at Saint Xavier University, where students took pictures by the water. It was quite chaotic, as many parents and students were scattered around. We lucked out with the weather, though, as it was around 55 degrees with the sun shining.

Senior Jim Noonan said, “The sun made my shoes shine like I’ve never seen before. I felt like a million bucks.”

The date was Aug. 19, 2024, the first day of school. I was not super excited to be back in school, per usual. But there was one thing I especially missed over the summer: cafeteria cookies.

I ran to the cafeteria line. I love those cookies more than anything, but I was caught by surprise. There was a change in the cookies, a whole new recipe. Just from my first look, I knew they were not the same anymore. The gooeyness and chocolate were dormant compared to the cookies from my past three years.

The Standard: Jack Weigus ‘25 reaches 1,500 points

On Feb. 22, Brother Rice basketball senior Jack Weigus surpassed 1,500 career varsity points. This is an impressive achievement for Weigus and a true testament to his high school basketball journey.

In a short time, Weigus made a name for himself as a Crusader. He transferred to Brother Rice this fall after attending Hinsdale South for three years. The Standard: BRTV Senior Night

On Jan. 31, BRTV honored its senior members between the sophomore and varsity basketball games against Fenwick High School. This year’s senior class is the largest in the program’s history, with 13 members. Over the past four years, they have helped capture some of the most memorable moments in Brother Rice’s sports.

“Knowing this is one of my last times putting on the orange jacket is definitely bittersweet,” senior Matt Phelan said. “I’m most thankful for the rest of the crew, and I know the underclassmen will be ready to take on our roles in the future.”

On Nov. 28, the nation celebrates Thanksgiving — a time for families to come together, express gratitude, and share a meal. It’s also a time when football fans sneak away to watch the NFL’s Thanksgiving games.

Games start at 11:30 a.m. CST with an NFC North matchup between the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. The Bears are struggling this season, but fans saw a spark in week 11 under new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. Meanwhile, the Lions are one of the NFL’s best teams, leading the league with an average of 33.6 points per game.

On Oct. 24, Brother Rice hosted its annual parent-teacher conferences. These meetings are a valuable way for parents to meet their sons’ teachers. Even more importantly, the conferences bring out the truth about how their son acts in school.

The Standard: My Weekend as a Redbird

On Friday, Sept. 28, I traveled to Normal, Illinois, to get a feel for the college lifestyle. Illinois State University’s Homecoming celebration had been marked on my calendar since I couldn’t attend last year. I decided to visit my brother, Joe Scarriot, a former journalist for The Standard.

The fun began Friday night as I arrived in Normal via Amtrak. One of the most attractive features of possibly attending Illinois State next fall is the transportation. The Amtrak train takes you directly to campus from Summit, Illinois, making it convenient for my brother and all students to come home.
