This school year has been filled with memories and new friends, but it is quickly coming to an end. On April 19, Brother Rice volleyball held one of the largest tournaments in Illinois this year. The “Smack Attack” tournament holds 24 of the top teams from the Midwest. The competition has been at a peak since the tournament started 14 years ago, and it will only continue to grow.

The Crusaders started off the weekend hot by sweeping Lincoln-Way Central and Richards. The two effortless wins set up the boys in the gold bracket play for the rest of the weekend.

On March 18, the Brother Rice varsity volleyball team started their season against Sandburg High School. Coming off a great playoff run last year, the Crusaders look to get back to a deep postseason run and ultimately win it all.

The Crusaders bring back starter and key player, junior Paul Baker. Paul is a proud alum of St. Germaine, and he started on the varsity squad as a freshman and has never looked back since. He has established himself as a leader in the classroom and on the court.

On Feb. 10, the Brother Rice varsity basketball team participated in the “border battle” showdown. The Crusaders traveled to Racine, WI, to take on a very talented Verona High School team.

The game was set on two halves, each containing 18 minutes. There was no shot clock, just like an ordinary game in the Catholic League.

Coming off a huge win over 4th ranked team Mount Carmel, the Crusaders were at an all-time stretch of momentum. Last year, the win over the Caravan gave them pride, but they quickly threw it away with a loss to Lemont High School.

On Jan. 19, the Brother Rice varsity basketball team faced a CCL rival DePaul Prep. The Crusaders and Rams have been facing off for a long time, dating back to the former Gordon Tech Rams.

As the Brother Rice soccer team continues to roll past the competition, the leader has been rewarded for this remarkable season. Coach Matt Prunckle earned the Tony Lawless Coach of the Year award concluding the regular season.

The Tony Lawless Coach of the Year award exemplifies the most valuable manager in the Catholic League. Prunckle’s selfless characteristics really improve his relationships with each and every player associated with the program.

The John P. Leahy Junior of the Year award is the most prestigious award handed out at Brother Rice. Each winner and finalist has exemplified the true characteristics of a leader. Six Brother Rice juniors are chosen every school year to represent the award as finalists and one winner.

The six juniors from the 2022-2023 school year chosen as finalists were seniors (former juniors) J.D. Gamboa, Seamus Hanley, Owen McShane, Edward Maloney, Mac Murzyn, and Alexander LaMantia.
