Regardless of where you look to go to high school, everyone tells you one thing: “the time flies by.” Now looking back on my four years, I can confirm that this is absolutely true. Especially senior year.

After searching for potential colleges over the summer, I began compiling a list and beginning applications. While daunting at first, I managed to submit an application to numerous schools and, thankfully, I was accepted to a number of them. In my opinion, the fall of your senior year, in combination with either sports, new classes, or college applications, is […]

“Facere et docere”: to do and to teach. This is the motto of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. Through service, academics, and faith, schools of the congregation aim to mold young people into the image of Blessed Edmund Ignatious Rice. While other schools adhere to the same academic standards as Brother Rice, service and faith place the Brother Rice community in a special group of schools.

During the pandemic, service became difficult to perform, and many of the school’s usual commitments needed to be placed on hold. Now for the first time since the pandemic began, Brother Rice students […]

Everyone has a time in school where they ask themselves “Why do I need to learn this?” For some this may come in math or English class, but nobody at Brother Rice feels this way during any of the five lectures Mr. Jack McLaughlin delivers to the senior class each year.

Following his retirement from Apple, Mr. McLaughlin returned to Brother Rice for Career Day. Given his career experience and extensive background in personal development at Apple, he always wondered if it would be beneficial to share his knowledge with Brother Rice students on the verge of college and […]

The Standard: Evolving Admissions: An Interview with Mr. Creed

On the night I submitted my first college applications, my immediate family along with my grandparents went out to dinner. Conversation was jovial, and my grandparents asked me numerous questions about college applications. The most interesting questions came from my grandfather. He asked, “So how did you submit your applications? Did you mail them?”

At first, it almost sounded like a joke. Mail? Why would anybody mail documents? However, there was a time not too long ago when everything was done on paper. Colleges and universities have made substantial changes to the admission process over the past fifty years.

In […]

The Standard: Paving the Way for a Brighter Future – An Interview with Mr. Donahue

If you had $2 million, would your first choice be to spend it on a parking lot? I know I certainly would not. However, after interviewing Mr. Donahue, president of Brother Rice High School, I have learned that this is only the beginning of a larger project to revamp the Brother Rice campus.

Because city standards have changed so much, the old parking lot required massive changes such as drainage and runoff areas. Rather than refurbish the old parking lot, the Brother Rice administration decided it would be best to build an entirely new parking lot to accommodate city […]
