It feels like my junior year had just ended a couple of months ago and now senior year is already over. This year has gone by faster than I ever could have anticipated.

The Crusaders have had a tough start to the season by winning 10 games, but also losing 10 games. This is not up to the team’s standards after making it to the state championship last year.

It is still very early in the season, and there is still plenty of time for the boys to get back on track and win again.

Most recently, the Crusaders lost to St. Rita in a very close game of 6-5. This handed them their first loss in Catholic League play this year, pushing their Catholic League record to 4-1.

The Standard: Crusader Golf Club

Brother Rice is starting up a new club this upcoming spring. The golf club will be run by head varsity golf coach Tim Vaughan.

This club will be open for anyone to join and requires no experience. All are welcome to come have fun and learn how to play golf. There will also be some members of the golf team participating in the golf club.

The Standard: Scholastic Bowl Regular Season Review

The regular season comes to an end for the Brother Rice Scholastic Bowl team. After a great season, the team is getting ready for regionals on Mar. 4.

Scholastic Bowl had 14 wins and four losses this season, taking third place in the South Metropolitan Scholastic Bowl league. The Crusaders are currently tied for third with Marist and Providence and are in a good spot to make a run to the state playoffs.

Coach Mrs. Pansino said, “Point differentials were used to break the tie, and we ended in third place, which will help us in regionals.”

The Standard: Crusader Basketball Rolls On

Crusader basketball has been off to a great start this season. The team has improved to 19 wins and two losses and have been playing some great basketball.

Over the Christmas break, the Crusaders participated in the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic basketball tournament. They advanced to the semifinal game, but fell to Marian Catholic in double overtime by a score of 75-74.  The Crusaders placed fourth overall in the tournament against some of the best teams in the state.

Senior Zavier Fitch was named to the All-Tournament Team. Zavier set a tournament record with 51 rebounds in just four games.

The Standard: Junior Leadership Ceremony

On Nov. 3, the junior class of Brother Rice participated in the annual Junior Leadership Ceremony. This is a yearly occurrence where the junior class is recognized and also receives their class rings.

Junior Ryne Shields said, “I felt a sense of accomplishment when I received the ring, and it was nice to have my parents there to support me.”

Brother Rice welcomes the parents and families of the juniors to come and watch them receive this important part of the Brother Rice experience. Also, the families enjoyed a nice lunch after the ceremony provided by Brother Rice.

The Standard: Crusader Golf Comes to a Close

After a great and exciting season, the Crusaders run has come to an end.

The Crusader golf team shocked everyone this season in a great way. The team brought home a regional championship for the first time since 2019. The Crusaders did this in stunning fashion by winning in a tiebreaker.

Junior Patrick Hermanson said, “It’s great to finally win one, after not winning for the entire season.”

They won the tiebreaker by taking sophomore Matt Hynes’ score. His score was the fifth best on the team.

The Standard: Brother Rice vs. Marist Soccer

Over Labor Day weekend, the Crusaders took on the Redhawks in the annual Pulaski Cup.  The Crusaders were in possession of the Pulaski Cup with an exciting 2-1 win last year.

The Redhawks took an early 1-0 lead within the first minutes of the game. Shortly after, senior Christan Morales scored on a penalty kick to tie the game.

The score remained 1-1 at halftime, but the Crusaders had the momentum.  Senior Bruce Harris nearly gave the Crusaders the lead as time winded down.  Senior Colin Welniak kept the Crusaders in the game with multiple great saves, holding the Redhawks […]
