In “The Office” finale, Andy Bernard said, “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them.”

These past four years at Brother Rice have been undoubtedly the best four years of my life. It is crazy to think that the strangers that sat next to me at freshman orientation are now my best friends and brothers. My shy self that walked through the doors four years ago could never have dreamed of the experience I have had as a Crusader.

Senior year.

The building. The people. The laughs. The fields. […]

The Standard: The Markulin Cup returns to Brother Rice

2021-04-05T15:50:56-05:00

By Quinn Clifford ‘21

The Brother Rice and St. Rita soccer teams play each other annually for the coveted Markulin Cup. The Markulin Cup game was started to honor the late Chicago soccer coaching legend, Nick Markulin. The great Nick Markulin coached at St. Rita for a season before eventually spending most of his coaching career at Brother Rice.

Nick Markulin coached soccer for 32 years at Brother Rice and won over 450 games in his time here. Unfortunately, Markulin recently passed away on Oct. 25, 2020. Therefore, the 2021 Markulin Cup was a bit more sentimental for Brother Rice.

The Crusaders and […]

By Quinn Clifford ‘21

Drew Timme is a 6-foot-10, 235 pound forward on the No. 1 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball team. Some may know Drew because of his handlebar mustache or because he is one of the best players in college basketball right now.

Timme is averaging 18.8 points per game this season and has been a big part of why Gonzaga leads the NCAA in points per game. He can score from all three levels making it very difficult for other big men to guard him. Drew is also an efficient scorer. Timme has the second-highest field goal percentage in the […]

The Standard: Brother Rice vs. Fenwick Basketball Thriller

2021-03-18T23:12:52-05:00

By Quinn Clifford ‘21

On Friday, Feb. 26, the Brother Rice basketball team faced off against Fenwick in a highly-anticipated Chicago Catholic League (CCL) matchup. The Fenwick Friars, led by Kentucky recruit Bryce Hopkins, went on the road to play the extremely balanced Crusaders in the Brother Rice south gym at 7:00 p.m. Both teams were undefeated in the Catholic League, so this matchup set up for primetime high school basketball.

The game was back-and-forth at the start, as expected. After leading 17-15 at the end of the first quarter, Fenwick began to pull away.

The size of Bryce Hopkins and the rest […]

The Standard: November Masters Recap

2020-12-11T00:13:47-06:00

On Nov. 15, Dustin Johnson won his first green jacket as he joined an elite group as a Masters Champion. Although much of the 2020 Masters was new to us, Dustin Johnson winning a golf tournament was nothing of the sort.

The first-ever November Masters tournament was very unique and surely one to remember.

To start, Augusta National presented a different look in the fall than it usually does in April. For the first time, we saw colors of red, orange, and brown complimenting luscious green all over the property. Secondly, there were no fans to offer the roars that […]

The Standard: The Tournament’s Unofficial Ending (Under Protest)

2020-11-04T20:44:10-06:00

By Quinn Clifford ‘21

The first-ever alternate shot tournament between 12 Brother Rice seniors did not exactly go as planned.

It was ugly out at Meadows Golf Course. From the time of our arrival to the time of our departure, it rained. The temperature fluctuated in the low 40s, and the wind howled at 25 mph for the duration of the round. We had the golf course to ourselves because no one in their right mind would play golf in this weather.

Due to these weather conditions and the lack of feeling in all of our hands, the golf tournament was shortened to 9 […]

On Sept. 18, Principal Bob Alberts announced that on Sept. 21 Brother Rice would launch the addition of free daily meals for all students, faculty and staff. In response to the economic burden caused by COVID-19, this meal program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and is provided by Brother Rice’s current food service provider, Country House Restaurant. The free meal program includes a simple grab and go breakfast that will always contain fruit and a lunch that is limited to a daily special and a single beverage.
