Walking through the doors of Brother Rice as a high school senior was almost surreal to me. It was bittersweet to say the least. I was excited for the year ahead, stoked for the endless opportunities it presented. But then I was sad my time as a Crusader was coming to an end.

I have made so many amazing memories and friendships in my time here at Rice. I am eternally grateful for what this place has to offer and what I have learned along the way.

In your senior year at Brother Rice, there are many classes that are labeled as difficult, and even classes you are advised not to take. Not only are most high school seniors itching to be done with school, the last thing they want is a class that seemingly takes years off your life.

One of those classes is Spanish IV honors, one of our school’s dual-credit classes. This means that students that pass also get credit for college. It seems like such a great deal, but at what cost?

Ever since I was a little kid, Brother Rice has been a driving force in my life. The colors maroon and orange were present in my life for as long as I can remember. I always wanted to be a Crusader.

On Feb. 18, the Brother Rice Crusaders faced off against the Notre Dame Prep Dons. The Crusaders not only won this game but did it convincingly, with a final score of 70-42.

This game was special for the many seniors of the Brother Rice basketball program. Whether it was four-year players, first-year transfers, or a Tony Lawless Award-winning point guard, these seniors have given their all to Brother Rice.

The Standard: Crusaders Knock Off the Rams

On Friday, Jan. 24, the Brother Rice Crusaders defeated the DePaul Prep Rams 53-52 in a very close heavyweight matchup. After a tough loss to the Marist Redhawks, the Crusaders needed a game like this to bounce back.

The Rams were the previous number one team in the state and seemed almost unbeatable. With a national ranking of 17, and impressive wins against teams like Mater Dei, they had everything going for them.

The Crusaders have had a very impressive season as well and have been very fun to watch. Despite this, they were heavy underdogs in this game.

On Monday, Nov. 11, the students of Mother McAuley and Brother Rice gathered for a Veterans Day prayer service. The students went to Mother McCauley’s gym for the service, along with some family members and friends.

The highlight of the service was sharing the floor with many veterans who risked their lives fighting for our country. Their bravery and courage speak volumes about the strength of the human spirit.

Deciding which college to attend is one of the most important decisions in the life of a high school student. This past Wednesday, Sept. 18, over 150 college representatives set up shop on the campuses of Brother Rice and Mother McCauley.

Mr. Patrick Creed, head of counseling at Brother Rice High School, is very involved with the college fair. He provided an insight on what the college fair is all about.
