Senior year, the final chapter of my high school journey, has gone by in the blink of an eye. It has given me memories and people I will cherish forever, and I can’t help but long to relive it all over again. I’m so fortunate to have had the experiences I did throughout my high school career to prepare me for what’s to come in the future.

These four years have been nothing short of what I expected when I came to Brother Rice. From my first day of freshman year to the bittersweet last week of senior year, […]

Alderman Matt O’Shea, 19th Ward, hosted the ninth annual Get Behind the Vest pancake breakfast in Kane Hall at St. John Fisher Elementary School on Sunday, Feb. 19. The event aims to raise funds to purchase new bulletproof vests for Chicago Police officers.

A big day was expected as this was the first year since 2020 where the fundraiser was open to the public. Due to the pandemic, O’Shea was forced to operate with a “to-go” and delivery method the past two years.

Matt O’Shea’s son, Patrick, said, “It’s always fun helping out at the breakfast, and the food is […]

Every year, the Brother Rice vs. Marist rivalry is regarded as one of the biggest games of the season, regardless of sport. The Redhawks were able to defeat us in football this fall; so, the basketball team had no choice but to seek revenge in their matchup.

Marist, a fairly young team, held a solid record of 17-4 before the game. The Crusaders were 18-2.

Coming into the game on Tuesday, January 17, everyone knew both teams were going to come to play. But no one would have predicted it to end the way it did.

Senior Jimmy Navarette said, “Walking […]

The Mother McAuley volleyball team entered the 2022 season with a chip on their shoulder. The Macs had fallen just short of a legendary run in 2021, losing a heartbreaker to Metea Valley in the final set of the 4A state championship game.

Being so close to victory obviously had an effect on the players; but instead of reminiscing about the loss, they were determined to get back to work and earn another shot at the title.

Senior middle Maeve Moonan said, “The moment this season started my team and I wanted nothing more than to get back down […]

The Standard: BR Hosts Pre-Season Clinic

In the past, Brother Rice has been known for offering a free-of-charge basketball clinic to grade school players before their season begins. It’s a great way for kids to get back into the basketball groove with football season ending in the next couple weeks.

But with Covid being in the midst of everything these last few years, the program has been unable to hold the event since 2019. It was definitely a big deal to bring it back in 2022.

The clinic was held on Sunday, October 16, at Brother Rice. It was offered to any 5th-8th graders who wanted […]

When Coach Frasor announced he’d be stepping down as head coach in late July, many thought the future of the Brother Rice basketball program was in jeopardy.

He had led the team for the last seven seasons and posted a record of 142-56 during his tenure. Coach Frasor won two regional titles in his first three years as coach as well.

His role will undoubtedly not be an easy one to fill.

There were several rumors going around about players transferring, the new coaching job, and if the team was really going to be ready to play come November.

But the players […]
