Last weekend, the varsity baseball team traveled to Kentucky to face some of the top teams in the Midwest, a true test of where the squad stands on a national level.

The first game was a matchup against Trinity, the No. 14-ranked team in the country. The conditions were harsh, with rain blowing sideways throughout the game.

Senior Danny Sheehan started on the mound for the Crusaders and battled through the elements.

Sheehan said, “Pitching against those teams was a great way to prepare us for conference play starting soon.”

The Chicago Cubs held off a late rally from the Seattle Mariners to secure a 9-8 victory in a spring training matchup Friday at Sloan Park in Arizona.

Originally, this story was supposed to be about the Cubs playing the White Sox. Sadly, that game was canceled due to weather conditions. This spared White Sox fans from seeing their team beaten by Chicago’s best baseball team.

Last Friday, Feb. 7, the Crusaders took on the Providence Catholic Celtics in a win-or-go-home game to advance in the Kennedy Cup. Even with starters Nathan Wilczak and Devin Stillo out for part of the series, the Crusaders battled every game.

The Crusaders came out strong, scoring two goals in the first period. The Celtics score right before the end of the second period to make the score 2-1 for the final period.

The whole season came down to one game: the playoffs. After a challenging year for the Crusaders, the playoffs were a clean slate. The team was hot, coming off a five-game win streak. The Fenwick Friars were the first matchup.

Hopes were high around the whole school. There was a difference between the beginning of the year and now; the Crusaders were battle tested after playing in the Chicago Catholic League Blue.

Mount Carmel, the number three ranked team in the state, came into our house trying to prove they own the Chicago Catholic League. They were very wrong.

The Caravan were very confident about their matchup against our Brother Rice Crusaders. It has been three years since Brother Rice has beaten Mount Carmel, but things were about to change.

Imagine this: the biggest football rivalry of the year goes into overtime. The football game last Friday could only be described as something out of a movie. Our Brother Rice Crusaders took on the Marist Redhawks in the annual clash of the Battle of Pulaski.

Senior Conner Stack said before the game, “This game means everything to me. Ever since I knew I was going to be at Brother Rice, I wanted to play in this game.”
