This past Wednesday, students from Brother Rice and Mother McAuley gathered on the football field to play some bags. The Best of Both Worlds Bags Tournament is back, and better than ever. There were over 60 teams participating, with two Brother Rice seniors coming out on top.
Joey Escobarete and Dom Vicari dominated on their path to victory. They took down Zach Johnson and John Cusack, Billy Duggan and Pat Sweeney, and the Merrick brothers with ease. In the championship game, they faced PJ White and Jimmy Lotito and took the win, 21-6.
When asked about winning it all, Joey Escobarete said, “It felt great to win, beat a lot of good teams and come out on top. All you need is belief and anyone can do it.”
The night overall was a great way for the two schools’ communities to come together. The tournament started with group play, with four teams in each group. Only the winner of the group advanced, making every game critical. The teams were then broken up into a 16 team bracket, needing 3 wins to get to the championship game. With all of the teams winning their group, this made for some very competitive bags.
Senior Ryan Moonan said, “The bags games were all very competitive and fun to watch.”
The bags tournament is a nice night for not only students, but also chaperones. Mr. Augustyn said, “I enjoyed spending the evening watching the bags competition, it was great to see the tournament was won by two peer ministers.”
All in all, this tournament is a great night for all of us to come together.
