The Spiking Crusaders took on the Saint Ignatius Wolfpack at Brother Rice High School on April 2. The Crusaders came into the game with a record of 4-9 and Saint Ignatius with a record of 2-6.

Brother Rice battled tough for the first game, but came up short against the Wolfpack, losing 19-25. The Crusaders had 17 unforced errors, which cost them the game. Senior Tim Novick finished the game with four kills and a few digs.

After the first game, Coach Matt Clemmons said, “We need to work as a team and communicate or we’ll lose this game. This game is ours for the taking, but we need to execute and play to our ability.”

The Crusaders started the second game strong by taking a 5-0 lead with a great service run from senior Jacob Evanish. The Crusaders held the lead the whole game and closed out the game 25-17. Senior Matt Funk and junior Michael Nelligan had a strong game, both racking up a few kills and blocks. Senior Connor Doyle was on fire defensively, getting four blocks in game two alone.

Nelligan said, “I was getting set well and although we started the first game off poor, we battled back in the second and figured out what we were doing wrong and fixed it.”

Brother Rice came out and took a 5-2 lead in the start of the third game. Senior Tom Gallagher had 24 digs throughout all three games and Tim Novick finished the game with a five point service run, which finished off Ignatius 25-20.

Novick said, “I was really feeling the energy from the crowd and my teammates, and it drove me to get those last five points.”

The Spiking Crusaders improved their record to 5-9 with a home win. Brother Rice will face off against Lincoln Way East in their next game on April 10.
