This past Tuesday, the Brother Rice Crusaders beat the Cadets of Marmion Academy at home in varsity volleyball play. The Crusaders entered the game with a record of 4-10 and the Cadets entered with a record of 9-4.
The Crusaders started out strong with 25-18 win in the first set; they then dropped the second set 22-25 causing the game to go to three sets.
In the third set, the Crusaders started out flat but managed to fight back for the win 25-22, taking two of the three sets for the win.
Junior middle-hitter Conor McMullen said, “When we won the first game we let up a little, however we were able to fight back for the win.”
The Crusaders were led by senior right-side hitter Matt Funk, who put on a great performance and lead the team with 12 kills.
Also contributing was junior middle-hitter Michael Nelligan, who put up an additional 5 kills and 4 blocks. Nelligan said, “Marmion played a good game, however we were able to limit our errors and that helped us a lot.”
Senior libero Tom Gallagher said, “While we struggled at times, we ultimately were able to get back in the game and win.”
With this win the Crusaders record improves to 5-10 and the Cadets record falls to 9-5.
