On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Brother Rice cross country team competed in the 2A State Finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria. After narrowly missing out on qualifying last year, the team managed to qualify for state by one point.
The team had previously competed at Detweiller earlier this year, twice at the Peoria Invitational, and once at the Peoria First to the Finish invite. The course has been touted as being one of the best in Illinois.
However, the course was muddy due to the rain and the other races that happened before. This was unlike the other two meets at Detweiller where the course had been in excellent condition.
Even though the course was not in great condition, the Crusaders persevered.
Senior Gavin O’Connor placed 12th, running a time of 14:47. He was also recognized as a member of the All-State team.
Gavin O’Connor said, “The team made unforgettable memories at state. It was a great way to end the season.”
Junior Andrew Straley placed 31st running a time of 15:03.
Other top finishers included juniors Oliver Davis and Aidan Leary and senior Brian Sheehan who all ran personal bests.
Oliver Davis said, “I knew with all the hard work that I put in all season, I was definitely going to PR. It was a fun experience being down there with my teammates.”
The team finished in last place overall. However, everyone was just happy to be there.
Coach Wazio said, “I’m very proud of the effort of the team. I think that having someone making all state and the performances that everyone had was a great way to cap off our spectacular season.”
As a member of the cross country team myself, I felt that it was great that everyone ran well and I was proud of everyone’s effort. I am sad that the season is over but I am thankful for the memories that I made.
