On Monday, Oct. 21, the Brother Rice soccer team kicked off their postseason with a game against the Agricultural Science Cyclones. The Crusaders took home the win with a final score of 9-0. A wide variety of Crusaders found the back of the net.
Due to the strong lead, many underclassmen and inexperienced players were given the opportunity to compete in a varsity playoff game.
Senior captain Angelo Piech said, “The most exciting moment from our first game was being able to see all my teammates that don’t usually play get a chance to close out the game for us.”
After the win, the team moved on to play Chicago Washington on Saturday, Oct. 26, for a chance at the regional championship.
The game began with the Crusaders down 1-0 before a Julian Zambrano header to tie the game 1-1. Gio Paz then finished a rebounded shot to take the lead. Angelo Piech scored a penalty kick to seal the game at 3-1. The win was the team’s second regional championship in a row.
Senior Salvador “Chava” Perez said, “We played together as one unit which was a big part of the success we had.”
The team is confident that they will continue to find success as their playoff run proceeds.
Senior Robby McElroy said, “I strongly believe that this team is good enough to obviously go all the way to state.” The Crusaders set their sights for Oak Forest on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
