On Thursday, March 27, the Brother Rice volleyball team took on Evergreen Park in a game dedicated to World Down Syndrome Day. The goal was to raise funds for the PALS organization and included fans wearing yellow and blue.
The gym was packed with students and faculty showing support. Over $600 was raised just from this game alone.
Senior Carter Mosel said, “Volleyball has always been meaningful to me. The game motivated me and the team because we were playing for an important cause and we wanted to do all we could to help it.”
The Crusaders dominated the game needing only two sets to win. The first game ended at 25-17 and the last ended with an even stronger 25-9 finish.
The night was not just about the game on the court, but coming together as a community for a good cause. Both players and fans embraced the opportunity to do something they felt passionately about.
Senior Matt Phelan said, “PALS is a wonderful experience that fellow BR students should consider participating in. The program works with participants with Down syndrome and involves a week of fun through a variety of activities.”
Senior Vaughn Goberville said, “I feel very strongly about the cause because I have a sister that is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. I enjoy any chance that I have to raise awareness and money for marginalized people.”
Brother Rice not only took home a big victory on the scoreboard, but also made a meaningful contribution to the PALS program. They made an impact that will be felt much more than the game on the court. Good luck to our crusaders as they look to continue their successful season.
