Last Saturday, the Brother Rice wrestling team traveled to Evergreen Park High School for the first round of the IHSA wrestling tournament.
The Crusaders scored 238 team points and secured a spot for team sectionals later in the season.
Junior James Crane said, “The team is going into sectionals feeling confident but also level headed. Our team goal is to beat nine state qualifiers.”
Thirteen Crusaders placed top three and secured a spot in sectionals. Major help came from Oliver Davis, Frank Micelli, Patrick Gilhooly, Colin Goggin, Daniel Costello, and James Crane who all took first place.
More team points were scored by James Lotito, Logan Connors, Jonathan Harris, James Bennet, Jack O’Connor, and Charlie Stec who took second place, and Daniel Tait who took third.
Senior captain Patrick Gilhooly said, “This season means a lot to me because this will be the last time I will be wrestling, and I want to make the most of it.
Gilhooly has been a part of the Brother Rice wrestling program for four years, and plans to make the most of it his senior year.
The Crusaders have dealt a lot with injuries throughout the season.
Sophomore Oliver Davis said, “We wrestle as hard as we can and try not to let the small things affect us as a team. It’s been a next man up mentality all season.”
The Crusaders travel to Hinsdale South High School on Friday for the two day sectional tournament. The 13 individuals who qualified all have the opportunity to make their dreams come true, and solidify their spot down state in Champaign.
