On Sunday, March 2, a group of Crusader students participated in the annual Polar Plunge. The fundraiser involves volunteers jumping into Lake Michigan as they raise awareness and money for the Special Olympics.
Every year willing participants from Brother Rice jump in the frigid Lake Michigan water. This year, students felt even more invested with the addition of thse new Mount Sion Program.
Junior Brian Guinane said, “My aunt does a ton for the Special Olympics and now being a peer mentor for the Mount Sion program, it felt like it was something I had to do. I do not regret spending the day with the ‘Brotherhood’.”
Along with other students, members of the BRTV crew could also be spotted jumping into the water with the trademark orange Brother Rice blazers.
Junior Nolan Leonard said, “I love the Polar Plunge as I get to support a good cause, help rejuvenate my body with some cold water, and be with so many of my friends. Especially with the Mount Sion program this year, I feel that the plunge has taken on a new meaning as BR has put an emphasis on inclusion. I look forward to sporting the orange blazer in Lake Michigan next year.”
Senior Gavin Ryan said “The atmosphere was very exciting; there were a good 20-30 of us chanting so we were ready to go in for a good cause.”
This year the Brother Rice community raised a total of $15,000 for Special Olympics Illinois.
