On Friday, March 6, four water polo players from Brother Rice had an exciting weekend traveling to California to compete with the ODP Midwest Zone National Team in 2026. The athletes were freshman Michael Gruszecski, who played at the cadet level, junior Anthony Albus, junior Joshua Milakovich, and senior Darrion Phelps, who all played at the youth level.

The trip was a big opportunity for these players because they faced some of the best players from around the country. The competition was very tough, and every game was close and intense. The players had to work together, communicate, and give their best effort in every match.

Michael Gruszecszki did a great job at the cadet level, showing strong defense and smart passing. Even though he is only a freshman, he proved he can compete with top players his age. 

“It was really fun but also really hard,” Gruszeczki said. “I learned that I have to play faster and be stronger, but it made me better.”

At the youth level, Albus, Milakovich, and Phelps helped lead their team with strong offense and teamwork. They showed great skill in shooting, swimming, and setting up plays. 

“The competition was way faster than what we usually see,” junior Anthony Albus  said. “It pushed me to work harder every game.”

Junior Joshua Milakovich also talked about the experience and what he learned. 

“I liked playing against the best players,” he said. “It showed me what I need to improve, especially my defense and decision making.”

“This was a great experience for all of us,” Darrion Phelps said. “We played tough teams, but we stayed together and kept fighting.”

Through March 6-8, the Midwest Zone teams had a solid record and competed hard in every game. They won several matches and learned a lot from the ones they lost. The experience helped them grow as players and understand what it takes to compete at a high level.

Overall, it was a great weekend for the Brother Rice athletes. They represented their school well and gained valuable experience playing against top competition. The trip to California will help them improve and get ready for the rest of their season.
