Members of the Diversity Club gathered at Holy Name Cathedral to celebrate faith, culture, and community during the Archdiocese of Chicago’s 48th Annual African American Heritage Prayer Service. The annual event honors African American heritage while having the theme “One Family in Christ: Called to Welcome and Service.”
Members of the Diversity Club attended the prayer service to support the celebration of faith and learn more about cultural traditions within the church community.
The service honored African American heritage through prayer, music, and homily. A member of the club played the drums, contributing to the energy of the celebration inside the cathedral. Senior Damien Melton said, “It was really nice to see everyone come together and celebrate our faith and culture.”
During the service, our fellow Christian Brother school Leo High School received the Pierre Toussaint Award for Community Leadership. The award recognized the school’s commitment to service and leadership. Student choir members from the school were presented to accept the honor.
Club moderator Mr. Parker said, “It made a positive reflection on the school, and it was good to see them honor our Christian Brother school for performing on national TV.”
For members of the Diversity Club, attending the event reflected the organization’s mission to promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
Mr. Gordon said, “During Black History Month, and throughout the year, it is critical to be reminded of how fortunate we are to have to interact with such diversity on a daily basis.”
