On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the Brother Rice basketball squad took on the Marmion Cadets. Senior Marcos Gonzales came into the game with 992 career points.
In the third quarter of the game, Gonzales drove the ball to the hoop and laid in his 1,000th varsity point.
Gonzales said, “Honestly, I was too focused on the game to even realize that I passed the 1,000 point mark. After a minute, when play stopped, that’s when I realized.”
Marcos Gonzales’ 1,000 point mark was honored before the subsequent game, at home against St. Rita.
Almost three weeks after, on Monday, Feb. 24, the All-Chicago Catholic League honors were released. KJ Morris, Caden Workman, Jack Weigus, and Marcos Gonzales received All-CCL honors.
Senior Caden Workman said, “I’m really proud of our senior group. I’m going to soak in every moment with these guys as our season is nearing the end.”
The Tony Lawless Award, awarded to the best player in the CCL, was awarded to none other than Marcos Gonzales.
Gonzales attributes consistency and discipline as a key factor to his success. “My whole life is consistent. Dreaming of these accomplishments is what pushed me throughout my high school career,” he said.
The Crusaders finished the regular season 25-6 and are focused on making a run at the IHSA state title.
