On Sept. 20, Brother Rice student volunteers gathered to collect donations for the Knights of Columbus community program, a Catholic service organization created to help the less fortunate.

Brother Rice students participated in the “Tootsie Roll” fund drive which specifically went to individuals with intellectual disabilities. After each donation, students offered a Tootsie Roll as a gift for their generosity.

Senior volunteer Joe Bowen said, “Helping kids who don’t have the same opportunity as me is something I look forward to doing. I always see the guys on the corner trying to raise money and I think doing it at the school would be beneficial because we have such a giving community.”

He was proven right as the Crusader community once again showed their generosity.

“It’s important that you donate to the Knights of Columbus because it does so much good for those in need,” said senior volunteer Joe McGregor.

The volunteers made donating easy for everyone who was willing to give. Students and faculty walked through the parking lot and the lunchroom to collect donations.

Junior Jack Singler said, “I was glad to see students helping out with collecting donations. I’ve seen the Knights of Columbus in my neighborhood and was happy to donate to the cause.”

The fundraiser was a great idea for the students and faculty. It involved the school in helping give to the community and to those that are less fortunate than us.
