When walking into Brother Rice for the first time, many emotions and sights hit you at the same time. The first thing I noticed was the BR plastered largely throughout the school. The first thing I thought was, “Who am I”?
Time comes and goes while in high school. Whether it’s dragging while watching the clock in a math class or flying by while cracking jokes at the lunch table, this is where you find out “who you are.”
Finding yourself can come in many different ways. Some find it through pain and grief. Others find it through success and through others. No matter how it is, it is what makes you, you.
Finding the answer to this is easier said than done. Many times throughout freshman and sophomore year, I would find myself scattering around people, trying to find the group that I could call mine.
This is where I find my pain in my story. Struggling to find my people before I knew who I was took a toll. Little did I know, this part is what helped mold me into the man I am today. Even through grief, you keep on pushing.
Without going into many details, and it sounds a little cliche, I think I truly found myself through my experiences with Kairos. Through my success in the retreats, it only brought me up, allowing me to discover myself on levels I did not know.
I finally found my group that I can help find themselves as well. Through my experiences, I have had many ups and downs, doubts and hopes. All of this has led up to this moment.
Now on the brighter sides of things, I can truly say that my time at Brother Rice was once in a lifetime. Through all the hardship, chances to transfer, and success, it has been amazing. My favorite time of this year was driving down not once, but twice to Champaign, cruisin’ and groovin’ with the boys. Windows down and singing some absolute banger classic songs. This is what stands out most to me from all the memories during my best year of high school.
Now, none of this would have happened if I had stopped persevering or even left Brother Rice. If I was asked to relive my time here, I no doubt would. Without this journey, I am not me.
Now the bigger question for you is, who are you? As you start your journey, you may not know the answer to this. As you walk the halls, notice the BR stamped everywhere. It means something greater than just “Brother Rice.” It is the start of BRotherhood.
Persevere. Find your people. Discover yourself. Make the best out of it. Time flies when you have fun.
