Brother Rice held its first all-school Mass, led by our new chaplain, Fr. Kevin Gregus, on August 28. Senior Braleel Brooks said, “Mass gives us time to come together, forget about sports and classes, and build a better relationship with God.”
August 28 is the feast of St. Augustus; through his teaching, boys become men. Mr. Lyons said, “The writings and philosophy written by St. Augustus are shared here daily, through the charism of Edmund Rice. Augustus started (out) lost and found himself through the Lord. As young men of Edmund, the students are finding their way as he did.”
After the conclusion of Mass, the Brother Rice Junior of the Year award was awarded. There were five nominees: Seamus Payne, Timothy Reidy, Brady Cunningham, Jayden Ortiz, and award winner Kim Victoria.
Being selected as Junior of the Year doesn’t just mean the student with the highest GPA, or the best football player at the school. Junior of the Year is given out to the student who shows determination in the classroom, the court and field, and in his community.
Kim Victoria, who excelled in the classroom with a 4.7 GPA and a perfect 36 ACT score, is a 4-year player for Brother Rice Volleyball and an important member of his community and his parish. Kim also takes pride in being himself and believes being true to yourself is the way to success.
